Well, my answer to that is that sometimes people feel it's necessary. for whatever reason Hitler wanted to invade england, the bottom line was that people did not want to live - or die - or be enslaved (it might happen) by his rule, for any of the conditions he ruled with. So, people who thought that fighting against him in the army would make a difference, decided to sign up and "defend their country". and undoubtedly, many believe that things would be very different in the present day if these people did not have that mentality.
