An option is taking a course to qualify me to teach English to foreigners (TESOL, maybe TEFL), then spend some time in a randomish country doing that.
I could train then look for work in South Korea - there's a good course there, and it seems like one of the best locations.
But then there's the issue of safety.
If Mr Bush and Mr Jong Il can't kiss and make up, being 40km from the border, I could be in trouble. (If I go, I'd probably be there for at least a year).
Between invasions from the north, stray US fighter bombs and just maybe nuclear fallout, it doesn't look all that.. safe.
Any war b/w US and NK would put me in a somewhat unpleasant position, and though the above scenarios are all fairly unlikely, I could well still find myself on the edge of a warzone.
This concerns me slightly.
So, convince me one way or another: Safe or not safe?
If you had the chance, would you rather be dodging bullets while teaching in Korea or dodging ladyboys in Thailand?
Thanks for the thoughts.
I'll probably take the 1 month training thing, then decide if I want to stay longer when I get there...
anyway, all I'm trying to say is I wouldn't like to move there. Maybe a holiday would be nice.
There are around 1 million north korean troops backed by aircraft, bombers, tanks, artillery and naval vessels within 12 hours of the border between north and south. Arrayed against them are 3/4 million south korean and US troops backed by similar. The US acknowledges that should the North Koreans ever cross the border in force then, at most, this force will serve as a 'road bump' - the only immediate way to halt such a large North Korean assault would be to deply nuclear weapons - something neither side wants to see.
Basically, if all that's stopping you is the worry of North Koreans bounding across to you then go for it - it's unlikely, and even if it did happen your status as a UK national would ensure you'd stand a good chance.
:^)
