> Come to think of it, when exactly did Nintendo pick up this childish image they've been cursed with?
It goes like this...
When Mario 64 was released, it didn't have all that blood gore and violence that more "grown up" games like Mortal Kombat had.
Despite being more challenging and far more grown up in gameplay than most other titles, the casual gamers didn't see this and the reputation stuck.
Even I used to agree with it...
until one day I played goldeneye...

...Humm.
It surely can't have been in the day of SNES and Megadrive, so somewhere the N64 generated it. Is this childish image simply a result of comparisons relative to Sony's Playstation, rather than any inherent difference from previous console generations? Perhaps the lack of racing games or fighters or other more 'casual' games on the N64 brought this on. On the other hand, did it have as many cartoony games as people seem to recall, or was it just that most of the games released by Nintendo themselves were too cartoony?
I wonder what effect 'peer pressure' has had on this, too. Even a lot of kids don't like Nintendo anymore, due to their 'childish' image. 'Sony are better' seems to be the naive consensus. Unlike they say in the Sprite advert, Image is everything.
Nintendo are stuck in the past, and if they don't do something about it, then they WILL go the way of Sega.
