Aren't McDonalds one of the ten wealthiest companys in the world?

£15.3 million will make no difference to them at all.

Staff are paid hours, not % of overall profit.
Their sponsorships of events doubles up as advertising.
They do nothing for the general public with their excess fortune, it just goes into a big vault and becomes more numbers on a spreadsheet somewhere.

Whatever next? You will be chewing your Big Mac [©McDonalds, just so they don't sue me for using their name!] and complain to a friend, "This is a big chewy" As soon as you have said it, 60 Special Forces (all in clown constumes) will kick in the doors and beat you to death with novelty oversied nightsticks and tug you to "the grinding room" to make more 'fresh ingedients'.

"McDonald's say the sum of £15.3 million they are seeking following the publication of the article last December, is their yearly advertising bill in Italy".

One food critic's article in a paper (regardless of distribution figures) is going to have minimal impact on the Italian nation's desire to eat junk food, when compared to the vast McAdvertising that they are subjected to and influenced by.

*remembers reading Fast Food Nation*

What happened to Freedom of Speech anyway?

How the hell can a guy who writes reviews of food in a paper pay £15.3

"We have the proof that McDonald's uses nothing but the finest ingredients and we will go through this point by point."

Words cannot express how happy I am that I won't be in the jury to hear that...
