But I got it last night because I was bored and watched it.
And my opinion?
Meh *shrugs*
I was expecting something thought-provoking, entertaining and imaginative.
But I didn't get that at all from the film.
It was well acted and the 1st couple of times Frank appeared, it was like "Errrrgh, freaky devil rabbit".
I was with it until the party. I was thinking "Ok, time travel/wormholes/rabbit as guide, I get it. Not a bad idea". But as soon as Donnie goes to Grandma Death's house and Frank turns up etc, it turned rubbish.
I mean hello? Having Donnie say "Deus ex machina" when the for-no-reason knife-wielding man pins him down...*slaps forehead*...sorry Director/Writer dude, but some of us know about that and to actually have your character say it is lazy and a cop-out.
So the engine hits him at the end eh? I got annoyed, arguing the impossibility of that happening using the basis of time-travel (as talked about incessantly throughout the movie).
He started the movie out of the bedroom, therefore was able to continue for the rest of the film.
But by going back to that point and being killed means he was then unable to proceed through the events of film - because he was already dead.
Therefore none of the understanding could have been reached, because he died in bed at the beginning.
Doesn't matter that originally he survived, by returning and being killed there is no way he can then continue his quest to realisation.
So after an hour of arguing, we logged onto the website and it explains the whole thing, as well as reading a website.
It's nothing to do with time travel, but is to do with parallel universes.
The one where he didn't die and the one where he did.
The one where he survived had "Manipulative Dead" and "Manipulative Living" (as explained in the pamphlet the old lady wrote but YOU NEVER KNEW WHAT IT WAS ABOUT).
So this movie only makes sense if you log onto the website and then read the site that explains what Grandma Death wrote about?
Balls.
I dont mind oblique, esoteric movies at all. But to indicate an answer yet provide no ability to resolve it yourself within the movie framework is the conceited posturing of an arrogant "I know the answer, that makes me best" assfaced writer.
Yet everyone spoke of time travel throughout, and at no point did anybody discuss alternate universe theory. "Ah, I threw you a curveball" says director/writer.
No, you deliberately provided zero clues to leave us feeling confused whilst you fellated yourself in the backrow at how clever you were at being obscure.
Good film right until the party scene and all that follows, because it then negates the previous hour you've spent trying to figure it out.
Donnie Darko - looks nice, well acted but unfortunately too cack-handed in it's attempts to be different and vague.
It's just plain BAD storytelling, not 'left to interpretation'.
Donnie is simply a fatalist.

> Dawson's Raging Porno Drugs Creek?
It's more like Dawson's Crack. He's quite good in it actually, the whole film's brilliantly done but I don't get the ending - have to read the book I think. You'll see what I mean.
> But I got it last night because I was bored and watched it.
You got it last night? Rented it? Bought it? When that come out?!!
I'll read your post now..
But the last 15 mins spoilt it simply because you had no way of working it out correctly.
With Lynch, you're not supposed to - just go along for the ride and enjoy the visuals, atmosphere and ideas.
But Donnie Darko was trying so hard to make you think about time travel and just didnt give any evidence/clues about parallel universes - there was just no way you could figure it out because of the time ideas.
Not a bad film, just seemed to be a deliberate last-minute change of direction and the viewer had no chance of keeping up.
But the DVD commentary and website gives you the answers - I just personally think you should be able to work it out from the movie with enough discussion.
The complete lack of clues/ideas just made it impossible to get there without help.
*shrugs*
Rules of Attraction shall be watched in the next few days, looks good.
Dawson's Raging Porno Drugs Creek?
And for the last few months I've been pestering everyone to go and see Rules of Attraction, no one else has seen that yet either. Bah, films are never as good as I say they are anyway, whenever I get behind something, everyone else always hates it.
*Whips up Kazaa*
