Righty. Lets keep it short and sweet.

I have a basic Sony MZR500 portable MD recorder.
I have a creative soundblaster 51. Live! soundcard.
I want to record music digitally from my PC to my MD

I have an optivalt cable, but the connector on the end that does not plug into the MD itself is, I'm told, a miniTOSlink or something.

Anyway, its a tiny square with a little but sticking out (that sounded good :S ) which doesn't fir into the labelled 'DIGITAL OUT' on my souncard.

Seeing as it says 'DIGITAL OUT' I assumed it would create a digital output from the souncard. If this is the case, there must be some cable to connect the 'DIGITAL OUT' on my souncard to the 'Line In Optical' on my MD.

Any ideas?

Cheers for any help lads

(and please dont tell me I have to buy an audigy. I sold my Ps2 which is what I used to use to record CDs to MD before, and I have no money left after buying a new TV. There must be some way? :P )

You need optical in not digital in, the sound blaster live platinum has it, do you have another output on your MD.

Wrong way round m8 :D

I want to output from the soundcard, not the MD.

I know I can use a normal phono>phono lead to make analogue recordings, but the only other input on the MD is optical.

I know the Blaster Audigy has a TOSlink optical out. I was just hoping that somehow the digital out on my souncard (which I've since learned is used for new digital speakers) could output to the optical in on my MD

All I know is that it is definetly possible, as my girlfriend used an optical link to record from PC to Minidisc. What the cable was called and where one might procure one from I'm afraid I have no idea. I doubt they're expensive, I think she got hers with her Minidisc player.

tbh you might just as well cut the faff and use an analog link. The drop in sound quality shouldn't be anything dramatic.

You will need to buy a new optical cable, which have jacks like those on headphone, rather than the square connecter. You should be able to find one from a good audio shop.

Is that by any chance what I need? Note it can be used as either a TSOlink or a 3.5mm optical jack.

Before I buy it, please confirm that my SB Live! 5.1 will support it. Inlike the Audigy which specifically states 'Opitcal Out' my card has only 'Digital Out'

Cheers Lads

You could buy that, as it has reversable jacks, or you could buy:

Bought the adaptor, plugged it onto cable, put one end in 'digital out' on PC, other to 'optical in' on MD player.

Played music, pressed record 'no signal'

Tried switching audio settings to 'digital output only' - no signal

=\
