It’s always a good start when a film jumps straight into the action, this time with a car chase showing off Aston Martins latest creation. Following on from where Casino Royale left us Bond is slightly fuelled by rage after losing someone he seemed to have actually fallen for. Adamant that he is not affected by the loss of his lover he’s back in the action and puts his rage to one side for the moment.
His mission is simple to get to the bottom of the organization that was behind her blackmail. It’s a follow on film which is quite controversial as all other bond films are pretty much one film each with a different story to tell.
So I’m sure if you have seen any of the previous Bond films you will know a certain character called ‘Q’. Q usually provides bonds with an unlimited supply of the most up to date technology and the latest weapons available. Well surprisingly ‘Q’ doesn’t venture into Quantum of Solace, nope, not even to pimp out the Aston with a few rockets and a bit of Nitrous. I have to say it’s a bold move to strip 007 of his toys and leave him with the bare essentials, one that in my opinion didn’t really pay of. It's like saying Superman 'you can't fly, you shall only walk...'
With all the bits they seem to have left out we’re still treated to some great picturesque scenes, and of course a stunning bond girl. She’s been working undercover as Dominic Greene’s lover. She sees him as the key to getting to the man who killed her family. Bad guys usually have a certain aura about them and this one seems like more of a little rodent than a hard as nails enemy.
It’s not what you normally expect from a Bond film in many ways, there is not really a romance within the film, not any really cheesey lines (you know you love them!). Thankfully it’s still jammed full of fight scene’s and explosions which keep the adrenaline alive.
Daniel Craig for me is still a long way off becoming an established Bond like Sean Connery. While still suave this Bond feels more like a hitman rather than what you’ve become accustomed to when watching a Bond film. You can tell that they’ve tried to make this film become a big title with a Goldfinger style death…. I hate to be so negative but really? It could have been a nice touch but somehow it really felt out of place, like someone had a bright idea after the film had been made.
So would I rate the rate the films above previous bond successes? Not really to be honest, it wasn’t bad but it wasn’t a breathtaking action film that kept me on the edge of my seating eagerly awaiting the next scene. It’ll fit somewhere in the middle of the pile of bond films squashed in between a couple of other ok but now forgotten titles.
6/10 worth watching but maybe just a rental…?
I rate Daniel Craig and hope he does a few more, while Sean Connory is iconic as a bond figure i rate the grit that Craig brings and that is more how bond should be, in my opinion.
