Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has told goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek to "be strong" as he plans to give rookie Chris Kirkland his chance to win the Reds' number one jersey.
And the Anfield chief revealed that Dudek was in tears in the dressing room after the error that gifted a goal to Diego Forland and put Liverpool on the road to defeat against bitter rivals Manchester United.
Houllier said: "He was very tearful after the game. But I will tell him not to think about it and to get on with things because we will help him."
With Chris Kirkland set to play against Ipswich on Wednesday in the Worthington Cup at Anfield, the England Under-21 star has the opportunity to convince Houllier to include him in Saturday's Premiership trip to Charlton and the crunch December matches.
That means Kirkland could face Vitesse Arnhem next week in the UEFA Cup as well as vital league matches with Everton and Arsenal over the coming weeks.
But Houllier clearly wants to help Dudek rebuild his confidence, and said: "The game is about mistakes and sometimes these things happen. Nobody will blame him.
"We finished second last season and that was partly down to his work and talent."
Houllier accepts that Dudek is short of confidence, adding: "It is something that all goalkeepers go through from time to time, but he has got to live with that and be strong to overcome it."
A side issue is that the arrival on the Premiership scene of Kirkland will also be applauded by those in the England set-up, who desperately want him to have regular top-level experience to see whether he can rival veteran David Seaman.

I think with the mistakes Dudek has been making it's time to put Kirkland in goal for a bit. But Dudek is still quality none the less.
I doubt that replacing him with a young in-experienced keeper from Coventry in a big European game will help his self-steem much though...!
I'm surprised that Dudek did the 2 costly mistakes in the first place. But all quality goalkeepers do mistakes sometime in their career, eg. Seaman, Enkelman, Barthez
Let me guess, with that very basic and immature response, you MUST support Man Ud...no, wait, Arsenal? OOOOH! I mean Chelsea.
