Liam Neeson is back on our screens as a retired agent whose past is shrouded in mystery, but one thing we know is he can kick some serious butt. When Bryan Mills (played be neeson) moves to LA to try and make up for lost time with his daughter and divorced wife, he is shocked to hear his 17 year old daughter Kim wants to go to Paris with her friend for the summer. Reluctantly agreeing to let her go, the two young women leave their parents and head to Paris, when they arrive they are greeted by a rather charming young man named Peter. Who escorts the ladies back to their apartment.

So the scene is pretty much set, and within 20 minutes of the girls being in Paris, a group of men storm into the flat and take both the girls. Before Kim is taken she is speaking to her father, who talks her through things so he is prepared to hunt down the men who took her. Neeson is soon off to France to begin tracking down his daughter and the people who have taken her. Due to his job he has some rather useful contacts and is able to get things analyzed quickly and to a scary level of detail! While working his way through the various criminals and low lifes in Paris he learns the dark secrets about the human trafficking that goes on around the City. How young women are taken, given drugs and made to sleep with people for money.

I don’t want to delve into things much more than that as I found this films strongest point was the plot. It was a surprise to what I was expecting but it was much darker and more detailed than I thought it would be. I was expecting a rather cheesey action film with an old man who was unbeatable. This is by no means Neeson’s greatest film, but he does play the part well, a retired agent or spy (we never really find out) who is out to rescue the thing that is most important to him. His daughter. Some parts do leave you thinking – “yeah, like that would happen!” but it is something that will always happen in these films, it wouldn’t be very good if the first room he went into eh got shot and died.

The fight scenes that do occur have been well directed and thought out, the chorography was impressive even for someone of Liam Neeson’s age. A lot of the film is at night and adds to the darker side of the plot, some rather shocking scenes of young women laying in bed waiting for men, or dead from using drugs really adds to the impact and had a lot of people thinking does this actually happen? As they left.

All seems very good so far, and if im honest I really enjoyed most things about the film. While aspects are far from what would happen in reality, it is a film, but then when a film is trying to be as serious and realistic as this, it has to loose some credibility when the main character can’t be hit by a bullet lol. This film was never going to be perfect and I did go see it expecting a slightly worse Bourne Identity. The depth of plot and character background did surprise me and really added to the pros in the film.

Like I mentioned, the film has its flaws with plot holes and it all ends rather quickly in a bit on an anti-climax. But when you look back at the hour and a half you sat watching the film. I think it was worth it. Some good action scenes, a solid, yet surprising plot. But with a fairly basic outcome that a 12 year old could predict. Overall I will have to give this film:
7/10

Its not a great film nor is it a dreadful one.I just found the whole thing a bit lame and very predictable to be honest.Liam Neeson was watchable as ever, without him it would have been a pretty dire affair.I would wait and rent the DVD,its not worth rushing to the cinema to see IMO.

Yeah, I remember that one. I don't usually go for the whole brutality thing but for some reason it tickled my funny bone. :)

No i agree and many people in the whole cinema were laughing at a few of the deaths - especially the one at the airport - if you know the one i mean!

I found that, while I was watching the film, the way he despatched some of the bad guys was ruthless and I had a chuckle at them. Not in a bad way, probably my sense of humour I guess. :D
