Shrooms is a bad film. But worse than that, it's a bad film that takes a fairly intriguing premise and does precisely nothing with it. The film follows the misadventures of five students students and who meet up to get off their heads on magic mushrooms. Their hunt for the aforementioned fungus takes them deep into a forest, which just also happens to be the location of an abandoned childrens home. A place which, you'll be unsurprised to hear, housed a few rather unstable and possibly homidical kids. Yes, it's stalk and slash time again and true to form, the students find themselves being picked off one by one by one or more unknown asailants. Ho hum.

What is supposed to set Shrooms apart from other films in the genre, at least according to the box blurb, is the whole magic mushroom angle. 'Is there something picking them off, one by one? Or have the mushrooms begun to have an effect on them? ' the movie's synopsis asks. But this question is answered pretty quickly by the movie. Yes, someone or something is killing them all off. So any 'is it real, or is it all in their minds' mystique disappears.

Even if you treat Shrooms as a standard stalk and slash film, it doesn't really have much to offer horror fans. None of the kills are particularly creative, and the characters are so uninteresting that you really won't care if they live or die. There is a twist ending, but it's a twist that you can see coming a mile off. Given the film's set-up, it could have been so much more, but as is, this is a pretty mundane and unremarkable effort. Avoid.
