It would be great to see an Aliens game that has no particular link with one of the films. Heres an idea I've come up with.....
Basically you control the life of an Alien. You start off as a facehugger (maybe with a neat little intro of the queen laying the egg you come from and you coming out of it). From here its upto you to find a host to impregnate, maybe with a selection of hosts besides humans - such as dogs (in the films this altered Aliens abilities slightly). Once you are "born" (maybe with another little cinematic), you then have to take control of your next stage of evolution - a small chestburster. Obviously you can't just start attacking people so well at that stage so you have to wait till you grow a little - so avoiding the armerd humans and any other enemies could be the main thing you have to do - using air ducts, etc. Once you grow up you can take on all kinds of situations such as defending the nest with other Aliens against Marines, capturing civilians to be impregnated, attacking installations like the colony in the second film with other Aliens. As time goes by and your still running around, your Alien could harden up so it can take more punishment. As for life replenishment, the feeding from the Aliens vs Predator tactic could be used. Maybe the overall goal in the game could be to get your Alien to Earth (which ends with a good cinematic of course ;-p )
This could be achieved by sneaking onto a Marine ship when they are fleeing from the planet you are on. Or maybe it could be an ongoing game you can go back to such as games like Black and White so you can get more attached to the Alien you've worked hard with. If I read correctly, apparently Black and White will have a feature where players can go online and have their animal god to interact with other players animal gods. Maybe this Alien game could have a similar feature ? Online Nest ! :-) Maybe with a record profile so other players can see what your Alien has achieved (as in enemy kills, civilian captures, number of installations your Alien helped to invade, etc). It'd sure be a game i'd buy :-)
At the moment, i feel Alien vs Predator is the only game that uses these characters in a more stand alone plot without the help of a recently released film. A similar game could be done with the Predator - take away the evolution part of it all. You could run the "career" of a Predator, hunting other species (including of course humans and Aliens). Maybe an online thing could be put together where players can take on co-operative hunts to get more trophies - some species could be unique to online play and some could be very tough to tackle alone, meaning there are rewards to be had out of co-operating with others. For example, lets say the game creators came up with a large lizard like creature to be one of these very tough opponents, a couple of players could team up (possibly with a number of players creating "clans" together holding a certain number of people) and beat it together. Even though theres technically only 1 skull to be taken, both players can be rewarded this trophy and in a record / career sheet, the trophy could show the skull of the prey killed and the names of the other players that took part in the fight. As for other aspects of the hunts, instead of your Predator being killed by the enemies, they could be "unable to continue" and withdraw from the hunt because of injury. This will save lots of frustration for players who have worked hard to get lots of trophies only for their Predator to be killed in a hunt. The amount of withdraws from injury can be recorded on your record sheet. If however your in a hunt and feel you have accumilated enough trophies for the time being, you could simply withdraw of your own free will. Perhaps a chat area online could be created for the players to chat about hunts they've been in and get to know other players (thus ending up with them forming clans of say upto 8 people).
Overall, both games i've put forward offer longevity becuase players can go back to them again and again instead of just a typical get through the levels, see the ending, thats that game. Maybe extra levels could even be downloaded online to add into your games so you can hunt in different locations or attack new installations. Anyway, hope at least some of you like the ideas
:-)
