'SOUTHGATE TO BE UNITED'S SAVIOUR'
Manchester United's defensive woes could be solved by the summer arrival of Gareth Southgate at Old Trafford, according to the Sunday Mirror. Central to the deal is Dwight Yorke, who could be made available to Boro cut-price if they agree to offload Southgate.

Meanwhile, the News Of The World reports that Valencia defender Roberto Ayala will be the man to replace Laurent Blanc in United's back four. He will set the Reds back £14m...

'WENGER WANTS STAM'
Arsene Wenger is set to bolster his back line by bring Jaap Stam back to the Premiership. The Mail On Sunday reports that Lazio may offload the Dutch stopper despite still oweing £10m of his £16.5m fee to Manchester United.

The paper also confirms that the Gunners will go ahead with the signing of Mark van Bomme

'JUVE TO SWOOP FOR HAMANN'
Serie A giants Juventus are the latest club to be linked with Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann, reports the Sunday People. With Brett Emerton poised to sign on at Anfield, the German may be surplus to requirements.

Liverpool would want a fee of around £15m for Hamann, who was previously linked with Real Madrid.

Apart from their interest in Emerton, Liverpool's ranks could be bolstered by the arrival of Derby defender Chris Riggot according to The Mail On Sunday.

'NEW BARCA BROOM WANTS JIMMY'
Louis Van Gaal has made Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink his top target after taking over as manager at Barcelona, according to the News Of The World. The Dutch coach became infamous for his penchant for signing his countrymen during his first spell at the Nou Camp, but appears prepared to adopt the same transfer policy again.

The paper also reports that Eidur Gudjohnsen is interesting Lazio and Roma.

'BARCA TO BID FOR VERON'
Barcelona are set to make a £30m-plus bid for Manchester United midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron, according to the Daily Star. They reckon that Veron could be a Barca player by the time he lines up against England on June 7. Sir Alex Ferguson would be reluctant to give up on Veron but making a profit on the Argentine could be too tempting to resist.

'KONCHESKY INTERESTS HOULLIER'
Liverpool have turned to Charlton left-back Paul Konchesky after giving up on signing Southampton's Wayne Bridge, says the Daily Mail. Gerard Houllier apparently sent Phil Thompson to watch him in England Under-21 action after being alerted by Charlton's willingness to sell the £5m-rated defender. Houllier wants to give free John-Arne Riise to play permanently in midfield.

For West Ham and Everton Fans:

Graveson from Everton could be moving from Merseyside this summer, to West Ham, as they need someone in the middle of the park to command things. Graveson has had a falling out with the Everton board over the club's lack of ambition. So he could be on his way south.

You know where you heard it first, coming from Special Reserve's number 1 pundit, James Pond.

I think Southgate's a great player and all, but I don't see how he'd fit into United's plans easily.
Yes, he is in the England World Cup squad but he's never been in a Club Competition outside England that's any bigger than the early stages of the UEFA Cup. He's lacking big-match European experience, and that's something our whole team needs if we are to do well in the Champion's League next season.

But after a good few years in the FA and League Cup, he could be a key player to help the young defenders in the domestic CUP competitions.
But as for the Title Challenge, it's another risk.
Aston Villa is the biggest club he's played for so-far. They've never really been considered as 'Title Contenders' on a long-term basis like United, Liverpool and Arsenal have for a good few years now.
So what good would he be to us there?? He may be expeerienced, but you can't adjust to the top of the Premiership too easily and he's still a gamble.

We'll be much better with Ayala and Blanc in the 'bigger' areas next season.

But I can see how they've got this story.
United need a defender, Boro want Yorke. And Southgate who is rated quite highly wants to be challenging for honours on a regular basis for once in his career!

But he'd be much better of at Spurs or somewhere, and that deal almost happened.
Just like how Ugo Ehiogu was apparently set to join United 'till John Gregory messed it up or something?

Liverpool have decided against keeping loan star Nicolas Anelka at Anfield on a permanent basis.

"After a lot of thought we've decided not to make Nicolas Anelka's move from Paris St Germain a permanent one," read an official statement on the club's website.

"This was a difficult decision and we know that Nicolas will be very disappointed, but the manager has always had to do what he thinks is best for the club and the development of the team.

"We finished the season as runners-up and want to pay tribute to the part Nicolas played in that achievement during his loan spell at Anfield. Everyone at the club now wishes him well for the future."

Gerard Houllier is now expected to follow up his reported interest in Auxerre frontman Djibril Cisse. The 20-year-old made his international debut for France at the weekend and would command a fee of around £14million.

West Ham's Frederic Kanoute is also on the Reds' striking shortlist, but played down reports last week that claimed he has already started negotiations with the club. He is rated at around £10 million.

I think it seems that Ayala will soon be signing for United after the 2 clubs have agreed terms. According to Ceefax, he'll agree a 4 year deal worth around £40,000 a week.

As for the rest of them, i've heard about Hamman's Juvé link and I don't reckon it will happen. And as for the rest I can only say the same, but I suppose the Hasselbaink - Barca link has a slight possibillity. But then again, why would they need him when they have Kluivert and Saviola!

Unless of course Kluivert IS moving....
