Earlier today I had a phone call from some "Windows scammers" - phoning on behalf of Windows/Microsoft etc. etc. I was tied up with something else so didn't hang around for long. If I've got the time and am in the right mood then it's fun to string them along for a while!

There are some entertaining YouTube videos where people have had the time to record everything - some using virtual PCs to let the scammer have a play.

I've just stumbled across this Microsoft reporting tool: Report a technical support scam.

It won't fix things but at least they are taking things seriously and not ignoring this dodgy practice. Often much of the data won't be available but it's something.

It's a better response than to my recent attempt to contact BT Customer Care where their company branding and name was being used in a similar way but they weren't interested.

I previously posted the text below in the General Chat and Welcome Thread but thought it was worth pasting here.

I helped a local elderly lady recover from this scam recently...

Trawling through her PC I can see the scammers tricked her to install TeamViewer (PC remote control s/w).

They then got her to complete a fake BT online form (see Twitter link) to get all her credit card details and more.

As per the form it says it’s for a £3 payment, but they actually took £350.

They then created a new gmail account for Kumara Khilesh, who went on to create a new Western Union account. They then went to transfer £350 to another made up name. Western Union put this transfer on hold and then later declined it. It looks like Lloyds Bank were on the case when their systems saw the transfer and stopped things.

The fake BT online payment page is a Google hosted FORM and was still live and available and no doubt being used.

Via Twitter I contacted BT and Google to let them know. I then used an online Google service to report the address as a Phishing site.

I had a poor response from BT 'Customer Care' when I contacted them via Twitter.

BT: "I am really sorry this has happened but this has nothing to do with us and we can't help." !

If someone was scamming people using my branding I would show a bit more interest. Google removed the page within 24 hours - but no doubt it will have sprung up again by now.

Nice one Hmmm ... to be commended as I posted earlier. This practice needs to be stopped and recognized by the companies 'mentioned'!

Windows Technical Department, became Microsoft Technical Department which has now become BT etc etc...been around for years, same 'modus operandi' just a change of company name but all operating from Bombay/Mumbai! Strange that BT claim to have moved their Customer Call Centres back to the UK ... you try calling them out 'of office hours or at at weekend' to discuss an account query....
