I’m not normally one to bother with DLC but shock horror, I’ve only gone and bought 2 DLC packs recently. To mark this historic occasion, I thought I would tell you all about them in a little DLC round up review.

Mario Kart 8
First up we have Mario Kart 8. This is the first of two content packs with the second pack due out in May. They are prices at £7 each or £11 for the pair.

The first offering presents us with 3 extra characters, 4 new vehicles and 8 tracks. When you consider that the main game comes with 32 tracks then 8 tracks for £5.50 or £7 represents some decent value, something that can be rare in DLC.

The 3 characters is a little misleading as 2 of them are re-skins. Falling into this classification are Mario in his fetching Tannoki suit and Princess Peach in her light pink cat suit, both taken from the Super Mario 3D World wardrobe department. Joining the reskins is Link from The Legend of Zelda. Apparently this is quite important as it is the first non-Mario game character to appear in a Nintendo made Mario Kart game. This is the older style Link, you know, the one that looks a little silly in his green outfit. Link likes to swipe the sword and brandish the Triforce during boost jumps; he’s not arrived quietly.

The new ‘rides’ on offer start with the Tanooki Kart which looks like a jeep and compliments the Tanooki suit well. We also have the B Dasher from Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart 7, Captain Falcon’s anti-gravity racer from F-Zero and the Master Cycle which is a Zelda themed bike vaguely shaped like Link’s horse, if you squint a little when looking at it and use your imagination.

This is all very nice but the real meat of the DLC is in the tracks themselves. The tracks are presented in 2 new cups for the offline mode. As with the main game, each cup is available in each of the 3 speed categories as well as the mirror mode.

The Triforce Cup consists of Wario’s Gold Mine (from Mario Kart Wii), Rainbow Road (from Super Mario Kart on the SNES) and 2 brand new tracks named Ice Ice Planet and Hyrule Circuit. The Egg Cup offers Yoshi’s Circuit (from the Gamecube) and 3 brand new tracks named Excitebike Arena, Dragon Driftway and MuteCity.

As in the main game, the retro tracks look terrific in the Wii U make over. They make less use of the anti-gravity introduced with Mario Kart 8 but this doesn’t make them any less interesting. Rainbow Road does present a little confusion as there are now 3 different Rainbow Road courses and all very different to each other. I won’t go through every track but some are worth a bit of extra detail.

Hyrule Circuit is one of the best tracks in the new additions. You’ll be racing across Hyrule Field and making a flying visit through Princess Zelda’s castle. Nintendo have added a nice touch here by replacing the coins with rupees and if you hit the 3 crystals prior to the room with the Master Sword you’ll open up a shortcut ramp complete with the Zelda discovery sound effect; Zelda fans will love it.

Excitebike Arena is naturally based on Excitebike and has the least interesting design from all of the tracks since it is simply 2 long straights with a bend at either end connecting them. Somehow it plays much better than it initially appears though and the Excitebike style ramps are randomly generated each race to keep it fresh.

Mute City will catch the attention of those eager for a new F-Zero game. This matches Hyrule Circuit for the attention to detail touches for the fans. Coins are gone and replaced by energy strips to boost the top speed. The circuit is almost entirely anti-gravity with speed boosts scattered all over and it makes for a very different feeling Mario Kart 8 track.

The DLC is great value for money and if you enjoyed the main game then you simply must own this too. Naturally some of the tracks are better than others but like the main game, there isn’t a poor one among them.

Resogun
Next up we have Resogun which is still one of my favourite PS4 games. The Heroes DLC pack adds 2 new game modes; Survival and Demolition.

It will surely come as no surprise to see that Survival is all about survival. You are given 1 life and thrown into the mix to see how long you can survive. Well the game isn’t that meant, it gives you 1 bomb as well. This mode plays the same as the main game but instead of levels, there is a day and night cycle. Naturally night becomes dark making all the explosions all the more impressive and you are treated to a fireworks display when you reach a new day; or in my case, if you reach a new day. Unlike the main game the multiplier isn’t lost so you don’t need to chain kills together. The humans demanding rescue are still there and you’ll want to risk your neck for them again as saving a few leads so some vital bonuses. Weapon power ups, an extra bomb and a shield will help your survival. There are a couple of newbies in the bonus catalogue though; one slows things down to give you a breather and the other gives you maximum weapons, maximum speed and a feeling of invincibility which is sadly short lived. Things get busy on screen very quickly with some new enemy types arriving with this mode to give you grief. As with main game, it is great fun, challenging and covered in ‘one more go’ syndrome.

Demoliton is a very different mode; this is Arkanoid meets Resogun. Like surivival, you have 1 life but you have no weapons other than bombs. The bombs are in infinite supply but there is a recharge period before you can release another. The Arkanoid reference comes in form of a wrecking ball. Charge up your bomb and the wrecking ball hurtles off in the direction indicated by the red arrow. It takes no prisoners and destroys everything in its path. It all starts off nice and simple with stationary enemies waiting to be destroyed. Before you have time to announce that this mode is a stroll in the park the mobile enemies spawn and these ones home in on you to make life more awkward

There are some power ups to collect along the way. Extra balls and instant recharges will come in very useful. If your wrecking ball hits either of these you will get another extra ball. Balls ricochet off of each other and barriers also appear to change their trajectory which adds a little complication. It’s not uncommon to be trying to evade some enemies coming from behind only to be faced with 3 wrecking balls all heading your way all with different trajectory paths. No prizes for guessing what happens when a wrecking ball meets your ship.

Being Resogun, it doesn’t take long to get completely overwhelmed in Demolition and the few seconds wait for a bomb to recharge can seem like minutes when under pressure. It’s a very different style of game but no less fun and no less challenging.

This DLC pack is a small addition to the main game but essential for Resogun fans.
