Now we all know that them shiny red labels that read '18' or '15' will immediately attract to a younger audience.

But what really stops people from playing these games?

We all know that the first obstacle is getting the game without the checkout bloke asking you 'Are you above 18 years of age?', which can easily be avoided by getting mommy or daddy.... *cough*... your parents to purchase the game. Simple.

So your at home enjoying a gloriously violent game, with nothing to stop you. But then I thought 'Who is meant to stop us from playing this game?' and 'How?'.

Do you get the police breaking down the door and saying 'Now Timmy, you should be playing on the Tweenies' and give you a pat on the head? Thought not. But does anyone really give a damn? After all, everyone's making a profit.

we also know that we don't go round undercover trying to shoot our family without being caught like on MGS, and we also can't turn ourselves into cartoony characters and blast a rocket launcher into a crowd of people.

So the point of this little thread is 'Who stops us from playing these games?' and 'What precautions do they take to stop us from being able to enjoy a game with a ludicrous amount of violence?

Independent stores especially, have hardly any regulations at all.

Loads of independant stores don't give a damn. This also occurs at our local cinema, but we call that the 'flea pit' so what do you expect? :D

I wouldn't know an ELSPA if it came up behind me and bit me on the a.....anyway I'm way old enough to be able to buy what the hell I like so no-one ever asks me my age.

Shops have been getting away with this for ages and I don't think it will ever change. If one shop stops you then you just keep going down the high street until one of the shops eventually lets you buy it no questions asked.

I think the parents still should take the blame in the long run but that's my opinion.

Sorry. You were right, we were talking console games.

The thing with the age restrictions on games, is that some stores don't adhere to them like others.

I think the ELSPA ones are often taken lightly, where as the BBFC stlye classifications *have* to be adhered to.

Are the ELSPA ratings still in circulation? I can't honestly say I've noticed it for a long time?

I thought we were talking about console games here ;) but yeah I agree with you on the internet, there's no way you can tell what age people are......you have no idea how old I am and vica verca.

Again, depending on age with the internet then again that is upto the parents to put the correct controls in place and also keep an eye on what sites they are visiting but I bet hardly any do.

I think the only way to get round this is to educate the parents. If they let their kids play on games which are designed with an adult theme (no not porn) then I think it is them who should be blamed for any actions taken by their kids.

Anyway, that's my opinion but I've no idea how this is going to be put into practise.
