I've just got to the 2018 world cup, and the damn thing keeps deleting itself back to the desktop at the same point, every bloody time.

i had that problem to but at a different time on the game and just ended up having to restart. Sounds like you've had better luck
it's happened to me a few times but i saved it just before i got to a game once and then for sum reason it didn't cut out. it was really annoying though cos i was 5 months in to the game and it restarted and i was doing well :(
click continue once save it and it should work if. if it still screws up go on manager holiday and it may bypass it.
