Personally i'd go for the Athlon but i'd boost it to about 2800, then i'd go with definately a GeForce as they seem to be the ones pulling the strings at the moment with Graphics cards and the memory seems fine. Also what HD you getting and which MOBO? two essential things and are you building it yourself?
heres a performance comparison hope its of help
I'd go for the athlon radeon for price and P4 geforce for stabillity and overall performance (DO NOT GET AN GF MX tho) they are very cut down versions of high performance cards and will not make use of your new computer system.
ASUS A7N8X mobo
2 x 256MB Corsair 3200 RAM
Sapphire Radeon 9700 Pro
AMD 2400+ CPU
120GB 7200 8MB cache ata133 HD
Audigy 2
Inspire 6.1 6700 speakers
Iiyama Visionmaster 454
Shiny new broadband connection
I cannot wait to play counterstrike at 1600 x 1200 with all the filters on
:o)

I'd get the most powerfull processer P4 2.8 (even though Athalon is the best make) cos game are getting more processer reliable. I bought my Ath 1.5 last summer and it already sucks on games e.g. BF 1942.
dont get a GF4 MMX cos they suck i know ive got one :(
Get a GF4 TIE or w8 for the new GFFX coming out soon
RAM is spot on, dont stoop to a 256 cos it is the min amount for XP to run on

Fastest computer I've ever owned was an Athlon 1Ghz. It ran out of legs slightly playing some high end games (Warcraft III and UT2K3 used to give it and its graphics card a very hard time) but it threw Windows around like no computer before or since.
