The true sign that summer has actually arrived!

So I set you a challenge.

I was disturbed by my mum's scream when she saw this son of an itch, and by the time I got there with the camera, she'd already covered it with a dirty glass, so getting a clear picture wasn't very easy.

None of our family are particularly afraid of spiders - it's just that this one was particularly huge, and fast. In fact, I wish I had got a video instead, of my mum trying to catch it.

So, I set you a challenge. This challenge is for everyone, but extra credit goes to those who are afraid of them.

Once again, I apologise that my one was already under glass, because my mum wouldn't let me move the glass to take the pic, but your challenge is to get a good, close-up pic of a big, loose spider and post it on here.

Go!

My pic

Just to give you a general idea of the size of the thing, that glass is an ordinary tumbler.

And i apologise for the state of the floor. Wasn't my fault!

I like the ones that strutt around as if they own the place and even get the dog to shift so they can pass without having to go around (okay, not strictly true).

I'll pass on the challange though 'cos I never have my camera that handy :)

Can't say I have photographic evidence but a mate of mine is having to go to bed these days in the knowledge that there are a few false black widows knocking about his house, the most poisonous spider in the UK.

A bite won't kill you, but effects have been known to range from the entire affected area swelling up (e.g. the forearm) to little more than that of a bad bee sting.
