The quote “Greatness from small beginnings” is an apt description of not only the story of fortune hunter Nathan Drake but the whole Uncharted series, the first game Drake’s Fortune was crammed with frantic gun battles and challenging platforming in jaw dropping jungle vistas all wrapped up in an epic cinematic tale, simply put the game was ahead of it’s time and unsurprisingly a huge success.

Naughty Dog built on that success to great effect with Among Thieves in 2009, with the quest for El Dorado and the Cintamani Stone behind him finding the “Atlantis of the Sands” is Drake’s next goal and the focus of the third game in the series Drake’s Deception.

The single player campaign starts off in a London pub where a dodgy deal is going down between Drake, old friend Sully and some shady types in black suits and in true Uncharted fashion it quickly goes south resulting in a bar brawl with some local thugs, this is where the tutorial for the “new and improved” melee system comes in which allows you to engage in fisticuffs with multiple foes at once.

That being said much of it still relies heavily on hammering the square button with only an occasional press of triangle or circle needed to counter or grapple so players of previous games will feel right at home, the only time melee truly feels any different is when you fight “Brutes” these massive guys who have obviously been drinking too much milk constantly try to get into melee range and can only be hurt once their attacks are countered forcing you to make full use of your attack repertoire.

Gun battles are pretty much business as usual and are as frantic as ever, although enemies are quite a bit smarter and go to great lengths to ruin your day regularly attempting to flank and drive you out of cover with grenades, on the flipside you can now throw them back at the cheeky sod who pulled the pin and any allies that are along for the ride can hold their own rather well, weapons and ammo are also much more plentiful, the odds will always be stacked against you but never to the point where the pad gets launched at the wall.

Platforming has always been an integral part of the Uncharted formula and now is no different but this time it plays a bigger role in combat, there will be plenty of times where you are attacked mid-climb and will have to make like a Red Bull fuelled Spiderman in order to avoid getting ventilated although if you have a handgun and a clear shot you can fight back to some degree,

Puzzles also make a return but Naughty Dog have rendered the challenge of solving them moot by giving the option to reveal their solutions after a bit of time, initially this could seem like a bad idea but some are real head scratchers so it's a case of a bad thing done for the right reasons.

As always, the graphics are excellent and everything no matter how small is incredibly detailed making it almost seem like a great insult to fight and make your way through the various environments, voice acting is once again top notch and makes the Uncharted cast seem more human and believable.

Multiplayer is back and is better than ever, there are tons more customisation options to choose from, new features include the ability to create custom clan emblems from preset icons as well as a custom character who can be kitted out with a variety of different clothes and accessories although oddly there are no hairstyle options to choose from, if you don’t want to make one then plenty of characters from the single player such as Drake or Marlowe are available to choose from.

Weapon loadouts, performance boosters and “medal kickbacks” can be adjusted to suit your play style, the latter gives you a huge advantage for a short time if you unlock the appropriate number of medals during play, there are plenty of game modes to get stuck into ranging from old favourites such as Elimination or Plunder to brand new ones like Three Team Deathmatch or Hardcore, you can also play with friends in co-op either in splitscreen or online.

Whatever mode you choose to play the game rewards you with medals constantly for practically everything you do whether that’s fragging 2 players at once or even just dying a lot, the only problem with multiplayer is poor matchmaking, rank 1 newbies will no doubt find their first few matches irritating due to being regularly thrown up against fully upgraded rank 75 elites.

One or two minor irritations aside, Uncharted 3 remains a brilliant game and is a more than worthy addition to the series which will keep you coming back for more time and time again until your pad is a smoking wreck.
