Fruit Ninja Kinect is an adaption of the hit iOS game where chopping fruit in half is the order of the day. Kinect allows you to do this literally by swiping your hand (or hands) down and across the screen in a cutting motion.
Classic mode has you trying to cut all the fruit that gets thrown at you without missing any, while also avoiding bombs that sneakily turn up beside the fruit. Once you miss three then it's game over. High scores unlock new backgrounds or colours for your swiping actions.
Zen mode has you just cutting fruit without all the distractions, allowing you to just aim for a big high score. It's less focused than the other game types but provides a welcome change of pace.
Arcade has a 60 second timer, ensuring that the pace remains frantic throughout. Bombs detract from your score as you wave your limbs about trying to cut as much fruit as possible in just one minute.
The controls work surprisingly well, with a constant shadow of the player on screen to allow you to get your bearings. Both legs and arms are used (assuming you stand back enough from the sensor and have enough space) to slice and dice, making most games as much fun for spectators as it is for the player.
While these modes replicate the touchscreen swiping of the iPhone fairly well, it's the multiplayer which sets the Kinect version apart and will be the main reason for many to come back to the game.
Multiplayer has 2 players standing side by side, competing for the most points. It's a completely mad affair where arms and legs will often meet in heated battle and enemies will be made as the sweat forms. More than anything else in the game, this is the most entertaining mode when you have a few friends around.
But ultimately Fruit Ninja Kinect is a minimalist game and you may baulk at the cost on XBL Arcade. It may also be why the game was given free inside The Gunstringer (a great Kinect game itself). However, if you're looking for a new party game, have a penchant for fruit and have some spare MS Points then Fruit Ninja Kinect may just be the game you need.
