It's been a while since I've really got into a computer game, I think the last time was back in 2003 - 2005 when World of Warcraft started to show it's face and revolutionised MMORPGs.
Having said that the game type behind Rise of Immortals and several other games of this genre originated from a mod of Warcraft 3 called Defence of the Ancients. I've not played a game of this type before and stumbled across Rise of Immortals on Steam looking for an RPG.
The concept behind the game is fairly simple, you have two teams of up to five players battling for territory on a fairly large RTS style map. Constant waves of combat-ready creeps are spawned on each of the lanes for both sides and automatically follow the lane past several turrets towards the opposing team.
Each player has already selected one of the game's characters and starts as level 1. As the player takes out enemy creeps and players, they level up, giving them an advantage, allowing them to enable or improve their character's abilities. Items can also be bought as the game progresses to tailor the character to the players gaming style.
Combining the RPG elements and the team based strategy makes for some intense (and fairly unforgiving) PvP. The game is available completely free from Steam and you only have to pay if you would like to buy one of the characters that are not available free, or would like to buy a different skin.
