A girl flings a pair of glasses at you and you flinch. This is the first impression of 3D on Namco's latest Ridge Racer game and you'll probably not stop flinching after this point.

Ridge Racer 92
That girl, by the way, is Reiko Nagase. She's a mainstay of Ridge Racer games, as are many of the features found in this latest adaptation. Every game that has earned the name Ridge Racer has these trademarks; the slides, the manic house music and the mad commentator. They're all here in abundance and in 3D.

It's coming out of the screen!
But how well does the 3D work and does it add anything? Well, using the in-car camera it works fairly well, unless you're one of those people who tilt your body when you steer. You see, any deviation in screen angle sends your eyes in to a mad rush as the 3D effect completely mucks up your vision of the road. It has to be head on or not at all.

That said, you can turn the 3D down, or off completely, to reduce the effect and play Ridge Racer in the old-fashioned 2D way.

A tale of two Ridge Racers
Having been playing Ridge Racer on PSP for a while, it's interesting to share a comparison between the two games. One on a system that has been out for many years and the other on a brand new console. Surprisingly, there isn't that much of a difference between the two. This comes as a bit of a shock when you consider the age gap between the two games. That said, both versions look pretty good on the small screen.

Street Racer
What does Ridge Racer 3DS have in its favour then? Well one is the new streetpass system. This lets you collect ghost data from other people you walk past on the street and allows you to play against their ghost. It's a good idea that boosts the game's life, but it really could have done with being able to play against multiple ghosts in a full on race.

Ridge RacerS
Multiplayer is catered for by a 4 player local play system. I only assume that Namco made this game before Nintendo had finalised their online system. While local play is great if you have friends that have a copy of the game, online play would have suited Ridge Racer far better.

THE Ridge Racer
But despite the criticism, this is Ridge Racer. What I mean is that this is the game everyone is familiar with. Add some features, take some away, the game remains the same. If you like Ridge Racer then you'll like this. If you've never tried the game, where have you been?!
