HALF of children using the internet have suffered sex abuse, bullying or other threats, a poll reveals.

The NSPCC survey found 50.4 per cent of kids had suffered an “unwanted experience” as the use of social networking sites increases.

Some 52 per cent of kids now log on to sites like Bebo at least once a day, increasing their exposure to abusers. Top reason for using these websites was to make new friends (89 per cent) or hook up with people they already know (79 per cent).

But 60 per cent admit they log on to prevent loneliness, and 53 per cent use the sites to share their problems.

The NSPCC revealed the findings of its survey as it launched this year’s Don’t Hide It campaign. The charity wants kids to speak out about ANY form of abuse they suffer on the internet.

NSPCC director Dame Mary Marsh said: “Children face real threats on the internet such as sexual grooming, cyber-bullying, exposure to violent, pornographic and other unsuitable material and being lured into dangerous real-world situations.

Previous research has shown that one in three young people regularly using the internet have received unwanted sexual comments.

lol what the research missed was that two in three young people have given unwanted sexual comments on the internet.

In the words of Benjamin Disreali, "There are three kinds of lies. Lies, damned lies, and statistics".

Yes, kids are going to encounter a lot of nonsense on the Internet, but even kids are malicious towards each other. It's like surveys on levels of kids who have "Taken drugs"; this will, or so I'm informed, quite often include alcohol or tobacco, which although not good for you, aren't quite like snorting a massive pile of speed or cocaine. (Which incidentally, some kids did at my school's year 11 leavers' ball a couple of days back, and got in an awful lot of trouble for).

Still, yes, it is a disturbing matter. But the Internet, like the world, is full of very unpleasant people, and to be honest, if kids are encountering such things; why not report it or be more careful? Or if adults are so concerned, why not monitor their kids' Internet usage, if not block sites?

I'm in no way in favour of censorship, but if kids shouldn't end up seeing something, block it. Or make sure that social networking sites take a bit more care, as I believe they're largely unregulated. Not that I personally use them, so i don't know.

I think I was abused via the internet once.

Some idiots band added me to myspace a while ago so I commented on their music. I thought it was only fair. If they wanted to add me, then giving my opinion should be expected.
The music was terrible I might add. It had little melodic value with poor vocals. It did have a decent riff but that was blatantly ripped off from another song and it repeated for the whole song, which wasnt good.

I told them this, which I deemed fair. It was constructive criticism. I must stress this now. They added me and I didnt now them!!

So the next day I check my myspace and I had several messages off them and their mates with all kinds of abuse about male genitalia and perverse acts of a sexual nature. It was quite pathetic really. I politely messaged back to explain that I meant no harm by my constructive criticism and that they really needed to deal with taking it better (They really did, they were crap and were bound to get lots more criticism in the future). They promptly apologised.

Basically, these kids (they were about 16) were acting tough with the anonymity of the internet. It like me posting on here and threatening one of you. Its ridiculous unless I now who you are and where you live. I think a lot of this so called bullying is just nonsense like that.

It didnt even say abuse on the BBC website, it said "unwelcome incidents" or something like that. How vague can you be? Every kid gets abused on the net, usually because they're kids and are damn annoying.

Unbelieveable! Bottom left, Mystic Meg is still stealing a living. What a genius.
Anyway, these polls are just stunts to grab attention from the tabloid rags. Suffered abuse.. what does that mean exactly. Should it not be Experienced mild textual dodgyness from potential pervs, which, due to the paranoid preoccupation with pervs propogated by tabloid over-the-topness, we believe lurk on every street corner waiting to pounce. Bogeymen, bogeymen. What the hell am I saying, these kiddy chatrooms must be happy hunting grounds for nonces the world over. Gagaga. Shouldn't my opinions be more coherent. No. What. Mystic Meg. Unbelieveable.
