The red bricks are usually off the main path through the levels so you have to do a bit of hunting. They usually involve some kind of puzzle to open a door or something.
i agree to the guy with the sonic picture, and i think that you should just beat all the levels and unlock the people then go back for free play to find the red bricks.
I'm fairly certain that some of the red bricks require you to be a character which you wouldn't have been usually to play the level. For example, Jar Jar Binks, in a level where you haven't met him yet.
