What do we think of self harmers?

Are they just "normal people" who come from all sorts of social backgrounds and use it as a way to release?
Are they people we meet everyday?
Are they mentally ill people who need serious help?
Are they just freaks?
Attention seekers?

What should be done about it?
Do they deserve help?
Can they be helped?

What do we know of self harm?
What does it entail?

very much doubt i`ll still be teaching in 30 years... hopefully i`ll be established in film/games/tv work by then.
would love to own my own visualisation studio.

i see your point though, friend of mine works in a cafe where a lot of lecturers go and they DO seem pretty jaded. i think they forget that respect goes both ways, i just treat the students like i would my friends. Plus i teach a specialised subject, it`s not a doss so the people who are there WANT to be there, it`s my first teaching job and so far i`ve got a really cool bunch of students.

"no i dont think it would be better suited to the intelligent discussions forums as it was supposed to gain the responses of everyday people.".. The people who use Intelligent Discussion are the same, 'everyday', people who use Gen Chat.

As for who is involved with self-harm, well, it can be anybody. I suppose, for me at least, the people I'd most expect to be doing it are the psychiatrically ill or perhaps those who feel they cannot put a point across in any other way than by lashing out at themselves.

I know it's conceived that certain social groups do it, for simple attention seeking, but I think if it's done in a way that puts a person's life in danger or hurts them badly then it stems from a deeper sense of depression. I've seen cases where victims of things like bullying felt no-one cared for them and all they had left to 'help' themselves was to lash out.. and the easiest way to do that is often self-inflicted. After all, suicide is really an extension of self-harm, at the end of the day.

I've never harmed myself intentionally very seriously, but I've done things which could be said to be on the scale, at least. By that I mean things like (physically) hitting myself for not doing something or venting my frustration by hitting a wall.

What do I actually know about self-harm? Very little. I know it's not an attention seeking ploy in terms of the 'look at me' or 'following a trend' connotations, but more a cry for attention when all else seems to have failed, to escape a certain situation. It seems to revolve around depression, chronic anxiety or even a stressful situation which seems hard to resolve. People can be treated by going to a psychologist in the same way other mentally inhabilitating conditions can be cured.

I find that teachers get progressively more arrogant the older and more out-of-touch they get. You probably do rock at the moment. Give it 30 years though and you'll find yourself wearing tweed jackets and complaining how the kids are all so disrespectful.

I just had to point out, most of us have been here a couple of years, and I doubt any of us would like it if when we came here people knew these sort of things about us.
We are mostly anonymous on these forums, and I prefer it that way.

We are not obnouxious, irrational or any of the other things, we just don't like stupidity when it effects us.
We don't mind as long as whoever it is apologises for saying something hurtful.
