Day 1.
It's been a long time coming, but I've finally had enough of my job. In fact I nearly walked out last week and it was only the fear of not being able to pay my mortgage which stopped me. The reasons are numerous, most of the revolving around the head of Department, who, for want of a better word is complete idiot. He's excellent at his job, but his people skills are virtually non-existant, causing a lot of bad feeling in the department. This would turn into a two thousand page essay if I listed all the reasons why I want to leave, but just to give you a rough idea, here are some of my main reasons.
1. The job I'm doing now, isn't the job I first signed up for. Back when I started, I was a Procurement Assistant to the IT & Telecoms team and had real propsects for getting involved in contracts and building the skills I would one day need to become a Buyer or Assistant Buyer. A department restructure meant I became a Procurement Assistant to the entire department, leaving me no time to spend on advancing my career.
2. The Head of Department has no interest in promoting from within. His predecessor who was a temporary Head of Department set almost every unqualified person in the department on the GNVQ path. The new Head thinks that hiring people who are already qualified to fill vacancies (at a greater cost) is the way forward.
3. Having seen a recent salary survey in the local area, I know I'm not being paid what I should be.
4. I got screwed out of a promotion, when I was by far the best candidate for the job. The role was filled by someone else, with no knowledge of the job, simply because they would have been made redundant otherwise.
5. Thomas Cook's upcoming merger with MyTravel will, in alikelihood see any of us without CIPS qualifications made redundant. Yet the Head of Department won't let me study to become CIPS qualified, even if I pay for it out of my own pocket.

Anyway, all that aside I made the decsision to get out sooner rather than later. So, step one, I updated my CV. Removing all the rubbish part-time shop work which used to be on there, as it's no longer relevant to what I want to do. And replacing it with my current role, trying to make it sound as interesting and challenging as possible, which isn't very. Said CV is subsequently posted on Monster and Fish4. I also register my details with a company called 'Inside Out' recruitment, a Supply Chain Specialist.

Updated CV in hand I head off into the City centre to visit the 'High Street# Recruitment agencies:-

1. Brook Street.
I head here first, as this was the agency which got Lucy her job when she was going to be made redundant. I see the recruitment consultant who dealy with Lucy. She's friendly, incredibly cheerful and has no idea what I do for a living, even after explaining it several times. After further explaining, she puts my details in her computer and turns up no matches. She rings round a few local companies on the 'off chance' that they might have a job for me. This seems to be an excuse for her to catch up on gossip from people who she hasn't spoke to for a while. Again, she draws a blank. She takes a copy of my CV and ID and promises to call me if any suitable vacancies come in. I'm not exactly filled with confidence, in spite of all the 'Consultant of the Month' certificates hanging behind her.

2. Office Angels
Next on my list, reccomended by a Temp currently working in our Department, is Office Angels. I'm greeted by a friendly lady, who it turns out is a personal friend of the aforementioned temp. when I explain my line of work, she explains that I'm probably too specialised for them to be able to help. but she takes a copy of my CV and promises to call if anything comes up. This really isn't going too well.

3. CooperLomaz
After wandering around the town centre trying to find their office for half an hour, including two calls to their receptionist to clarify where they actually are, I finally find them, a small door nestled between two shops. Feeling a bit more optimistic here as they list 'Supply Chain' amongst their specialist areas on a reception wall. Their receptionist is warm and friendly but exaplins that Liam, their Supply Chain specialist is actually on annual leave and back on Monday. She will pass on a copy of my CV to him and he will be in touch.

Now a bit fed up, I decide to head for home.

Overall, not the most productive day.

Who says I haven't?

I certainly have but don't really know what else I would do. I can't stand computer programming and I've not really got the skills to do anything else. Besides, why waste three years experience in a job that I theoretically enjoy?

all this talk of work is depressing me. I'm in my final year and i've got to get a job as well. Problem is i'm finding it a bit difficult trying to find the right one.

I'm doing BSC business Information systems. so i could take a project management job if i wanted, but that seems a little challenging to me. Seems like one of those jobs where you need a lot to succeed. Good leadership, management skills, good perception, maths, working constantly under pressure. Doesn't seem like a job that i'll enjoy.

Rewarding maybe, social life? Probably not.
