I know you can't play against others but we were told there would be downloadable updates.

Yeh, as you know Ali, i've got my PS2 online and PES3. No, i heard many a time that PES3 would have th option that allowed you to download option files from the net, but there is no such option. It annoys me as well, but luckily my mate has an x-port.
