Alexei Gurov placed a single deep-purple capsule onto his tongue and washed it down his throat with a fierce sip of champagne. Carefully placing down the crystal flute, he lay back in the bathtub and let the steaming hot water rush over his upper body. The water was almost scoldingly hot, causing a constant tingling sensation over his skin that wasn’t quite pain.

Leaning his head back, Alexei closed his eyes and reflected on a good day’s business. He’d woken up this morning little more than a bit-part player; a nobody. Oh, he could get drugs, and he could sell drugs, but the numbers were limited, and there was no way to control the supply chain. Valko, his father, a vertically integrated big cheese, the only person he knew of in the family that anyone took any notice of wasn’t sharing the spoils. The news of the city making a sudden U-turn instantly turned the industry on its head. No rendezvous with the Takata asteroid meant a lot of deals going sour and opportunity abound for anyone with the balls to grab it.

Alexei smiled as he reflected that he had indeed grabbed with both hands. Too long he’d been forced to live in his father’s considerable shadow. Now he’d struck out on his own; he controlled a sizeable supply of chemical and biological narcotics, and the muscle to influence demand. His smile deepened as a mild convulsion twisted his stomach, the purple capsule within dissolving in a bath of hydrochloric acid and releasing a wave of exotic goodies into his bloodstream. Letting his shoulders slip below the hot bathwater, Alexei sipped again at the champagne before wiping the sweat from his brow. He closed his eyes.

Bizarre and unnatural images floated before him, a world which couldn’t exist physically, but manifested itself nonetheless as a beautiful marriage of advanced chemistry and human biology conspired to release hormones which filled Alexei with glee and wonder. Everything he saw was an illusion, all of it somehow linked to the wondrous adventures of the day just passed. Near orgasmic elation meandered unfettered through his veins as he lie awake dreaming of the great future now ahead of him.

There was no way of telling how long he had been lying there when the images before his eyes were suddenly swallowed up by a darkness that was not a part of his narcosis. For a time, he simply lay there, joy etched into his face, as he waited for the light and the beauty and the wonderment to return. When it didn’t, he shook his head lightly and opened his eyes. Through his blurry vision and the steam rising from the water, he made out the silhouette of someone standing over the bathtub. At first, it looked like a shadow had peeled itself away from the walls to stand over him. Blinking furiously, Alexei cupped a hand over his eyes to see better, and the shadow resolved itself.

You!?” he spat venomously “What the hell are you doing here?”

Water rushed up from all angles to surround Alexei, as he found himself suddenly facedown at the floor of the tub. Crazy, impossible images danced in front of his eyes as the drugs in his system refused to ease their grip on his mind. He splashed uselessly with his arms, trying to grab something, his legs kicking with equal success. Something was holding him down, something as immovable as rock, but flail as he might, he couldn’t help himself. His lungs began to burn as they demanded air, a rush of terror racing to his groin, making him kick harder still. Then reflexes took over and water poured into his mouth and up his nose as his body desperately sought air.

The sensation induced a wave of panic that overwhelmed every sense and adrenalin surged through his blood. Suddenly his head was above water, and he choked desperately as his lungs fought the competing needs of breathing air and expelling water. Still the nonsensical images danced before him, and Alexei grabbed his head with both hands and squeezed his eyes shut in a frantic effort to clear his head. He was rewarded with the sensation of his head meeting something very solid at high speed, and the images disappeared instantly as the water consumed him for a second time.

Dazed and groggy, Alexei opened his eyes under the water, and wondered distantly why it was shaded lightly with red. Something at the back of his mind told him to thrash his arms, but it hurt to move, and he found that he was now very tired. His lungs demanded air, so he breathed deeply, only to fill his lungs with water. Coughing weakly, he merely replaced water with more water. His left leg twitched uncontrollably. And then it was dark.

Fair enough.

From some of the stories Paradox used to write, you wouldn't put it past him to become the author of pain...

Good to see you're still knocking about this place, IB.
