3 is alot better. The tracks are more compact and less spread out, the unlockable characters are better, and 4 really doesn't have much extra.

Tony Hawk's 4 is far, far better than 3. The third really was a downturn in quality for the series. The fourth remains the best one so far.

Two was a personal favourite of mine, but - let's be honest - it was rather limiting in retrospect. You couldn't revert or spine transfer, and you had a time limit for levels. The engine wasn't as refined, the graphics are now dated and you couldn't customise as much.
Tony Hawk's 4, for me, took what made the second so great and added the next logical improvements. I found 3 very dull, Underground was too short and apparently Underground 2 isn't a whole lot better.
Pro Skater 4 is pretty much the defining game of the series.

The areas in four are too spread out and too dull. And neither three or four are as good as 2, which was the best in the series.

You can get 5 million combos on 4. No reason why not.
It's a skateboarding game. It should be about skateboarding. Getting off the board, driving cars - it's all unnecessary and not much fun anyway.
