What was your goal when you were 16? If you were anything like me, it was to get drunk, laid, stoned, play football, watch porn, and all the other things I never did. Having the chance to help sway a general election never crossed my mind. Obviously it's important for people of that age to be aware of how important politics is, but 16 is far too young to have enough of a grasp on the economical and social implications of an electoral system.

What's more, society has gone rapidly downhill in the last few years. I think the town I live in is the perfect place to see where things have gone wrong. Eight years ago I would have been 16, and I was polite to people. All my mates were (and mostly still are) polite people, and everyone I knew was capable of being decent in some way, even if it was never all sunshine and lollipops. This includes all years above and below me at the scum-bucket school I went to.

On the bus the other day I saw a group of 'young adults' playing with a dead rat on a stick. It made me laugh at the time, but when you think about it, that's not funny. Someone, somewhere, wants to give people like them the right to vote. I argue they should be impaled on sticks instead, then eaten by rats. Of course, they could grow up to be worthwhile members of the Human race, but that's my point - when they grow up. How would you like to find yourself standing in the queue to vote, next to the Hooded Ratpack?

I agree

Not only in that I had to wait until I was 18 but my political ideas were completely different when I was 16. Fair enough it was only three years ago but I would have voted for the Communist Party or something.

Edit: What I meant to say is that 16 year olds are stupid, like I was. They're still growing up at a fast pace.

I tried to avoid the all out "k1dz r s2up1d" approach, but it can't be denied. Obviously there are 16 year olds that are capable of forming rational decisions, but the majority are insolent little retards, and hopefully the ones with sense will see the dilemma that puts us adults in when it comes to deciding who is entitled to vote.

However, you could say that about most of the adult electorate.

What I was saying is that I was interested in politics at 16 but if I voted for somebody because I was still forming ideas and then had to live through their government for the next four years then that doesn't seem right... or something.

I just don't see the need, 18 seems fine... they just want the turnout to be higher. However, it is a fair point considering 16 year olds are considered adults for a variety of things in society yet can't vote.

One that used to annoy me was the bus fare. I was still at school and had to pay an adult fare... yet if I was an 18 year old student I'd get a discount.

The argument seems to be "16 year olds have lots of responsibility anyway. Lets give them more".

No-one seems to have thought "Actually, maybe the idea of 16 year olds having this much responsibility is bad. They should still be growing up and bridging the gap between childhood and adult life. Lets give them less responsibility".

Bit of a joke really if it was to happen. The majority of them are little rat kids. Sure there are some intelligent ones who given the chance would like to have their say but with the chance of letting the others at it too it just seems like such a stupid idea.

Then again how likely are they to use their votes?
Also there are a lot of adult "rat kids" too, folk who have a kid just to get extra money, sponge of society etc.

A female friend of mine could vote in the last Scottish Parliament whilst I couldn't.

She voted for the Scottish Socialists because " she liked their symbol, it was a star ".
Another friend wasn't sure if he should vote for the Socialists or Tories.

See, 18 year olds are stupid too.

True enough, but it's not about IQ. If it were, anyone who reads the Sun on a regular basis would be barred from voting...

I know, I just like to tell everyone that story.

I actually agree with you. We're rushing people into growing up instead of telling them to enjoy it.

Heh. It is rather fun. Mind you, I voted for Natural Law Party in the Euro Elections purely on the basis that I wanted to see Yogic Flying in Parliament...
