When I try to play a file for example AVSEQ01.DAT from the MPEGAV folder of a VCD directory, I get nothing but distorted picture and bitty sound...it's all screwed up. My first thought was codecs but I have downloaded every codec i possibly can. I even downloaded the K-lite codex pack but that didn't work either. Can someone please shed some light on the matter.

Thanks.

Download VideoLAN, the king of all movie players. Will play pretty much anything, even if you don't have the codecs installed. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Alternatively you could rename the extension to .mpg and see if that works.

.DAT files are own taken from DVDs. The natural choice would be searching for some software that can convert it to MPEG or Avi. Tmpeg might do it.

I have tried GSpot but it cannot open DAT files and even when i rename it, it still does not recognise the file as a valid AVI.

I would mind usually, i would put it down to the file, but this happens with nearly all of the VCDs like that.

It might well be trying to use a codec with it that it shouldn't be, especially likely with VCD/SVCD as there are an awful lot of variants of the mpeg codecs.

Try downloading gspot and open up the dat file and see exactly what codecs it needs.

Alternatively you could try uninstalling all your codecs, download something like a trial of powerdvd or windvd and see what you get.

Fair enough. Try opening it in a text editor and look on the first line to see if it gives away any info about the codec or anything? Sometimes they do.

Are you sure the file is a movie file? A .dat doesn't sound like one.
