Alternatively you could rename the extension to .mpg and see if that works.

I have tried GSpot but it cannot open DAT files and even when i rename it, it still does not recognise the file as a valid AVI.
I would mind usually, i would put it down to the file, but this happens with nearly all of the VCDs like that.

Alternatively you could try uninstalling all your codecs, download something like a trial of powerdvd or windvd and see what you get.
