I need to get rid of soem stuff on my PC but there is a lot of it.

I have a DVD writer, but will it write dual layer ones?

Also i think Sony and Lite on are actually the same, Sony being rebranded lite on's.

Yep, this works because alot of the drives on the market share the same inner workings, I know that a lot of Lite On and MSI drives have compatible firmware, I guess that they come off the same production lines.

With regard to dual layer DVD burners I guess the firmware simply activates the ability of the laser to focus onto two layers
