Tsk, like dur. I'm looking for a short, concentrated passage on what a DDOS attack is, not recent occurences and their reviews of those events, thanks.

It stands for Distributed Denial of Service Attack. As in the name the aim is to deny access to a particular service but launched from multiple places in an attempt to make it harder to block. Normally you would be able to block the IP's via the firewalls until the attack has subsided.
