Hello.

As you may already know, I've been having a tinker with PHP recently, but to be honest, I'm getting no where in terms of making something that's actually useful, you know what I mean?

I've been through many tutorials which are just variations on "Hello World" or "Hello Earth!", "Hello Globe", "Hello Universe" - it's getting quite labourous, and most of the code seems exceptionally similar to C programming which I've been doing for quite some time now.

I was wondering if anyone could give me any "fun stuff" to do with the language, you know, like a small project or something to get my teeth into. A lot of you will state something to do with databases I'd imagine, but I want to stick to the bottom end of the spectrum for now, MySQL and everything can come later.

Thanks

A maybe.

:P

I've only just got to grips with learning the language, and I have a feeling this image thing will take some time to do!

I'm working on one at the moment. I'll let you know how it turns out - it's the first CMS I've done and I'm linking it in with credit card payment as well.

About a year ago I was really good at PHP - came to do some fairly complex programming this year and realised I'd forgotten sooooo much! Eeeek!

Yeah, I sort of know the process (I used to program dBase, FoxPro and then Clipper for a living), but I'm not so hot at learning new stuff - it takes me a while to absorb things.

I'm currently getting through CSS and having lots of fun!

It's not very hard to do - it just uses a fairly good range of PHP concepts. You have to read the directory to get a file listing, look at the file attributes, sort them by date, parse the title from the top 5, and echo them in the format you produced.

I was gonna do it myself, but then I realised I know nothing about PHP apart from the "include" command ...

That's a nice little starter script - brings in a few different areas of PHP.

Write me a script that'll find the titles and URLs of the last 5 amended pages on my site and output the results like ...

  • Title 1

  • Title 2

  • ...

... with the newest at the top. It needs to be able to skip certain files and discard part of the title (all my page titles are in the format "TIMMARGH!.net - ...").

I'd be willing to donate an amount to your favourite charity as payment.
