If you press the select button at the time of taking a direct freekick, you'll find you can alternate between views of taking the freekick, i.e. having 2 people standing over the ball, the distance from the ball etc
When you press shoot, you wanna make sure you dont put too much power into the shot, try and judge the distance, the amount of power you put into the shot will vary on the distance from the goal but it tends to be between just over 1/4 of the bar to 1/3. Try pressing the direction keys to judge the flight on the ball, when I press down I tend to find its a low shot, if I press back and shoot it tends to float the ball in etc
I am currently trying to master the method of making the ball dip at the last minute which is proving to be difficult but I know it can be done since I scored like that before.
Im not sure if you can curl the ball when taking direct freekicks, I heard you can maybe use the R2 or L2 buttons at the top of the pad but im not sure? if anyone else knows then id appreciate if you can let me know.
Will try that later after work, take it handy be good and don't fall

Just hold left or right before your player kicks the ball, and it'll swerve accordingly.
No matter where you are the meter should go about half way across, but just under.
Pressing down helps you to get the ball over the wall.
Pressing up smacks the ball, so aim at the net... not the wall coz it wont get over.
R2 is for a shot close to the net, like just outside the area and isnt very powerful.
R1 for powerful shots.
Left and right to curl.
Can always practice them in the training mode or whatever its called.
Thats one reason why PES4 is better.
