Original Post:
On my home page I have the image of the rat on the Left hand side and the opening text on the right.
I did this to balance out the image of the wasp on the banner and the image of the rat on the other so the right hand side did not look to image "Heavy"

Asking someones opinion on the site they pointed out that in their mind because as westerners we tend to read left to right and therefore the image should be on the right and the text on the left as you are instantly drawn to the image and not the text.

Conversely an advertising specialist once told me that in a directory such as yellow pages your eyes are always drawn to the right hand page and top right hand corner apparently known in the trade as   the Golden mean and the best place for your advert to be .

1. Would Any one prefer the image to go on the right?
2. Does it matter either or ?
3. Anyone have any background knowledge of these things

Just something to ponder over on a Friday afternoon !

regards
Hugh

To be honest I really don't think it matters hugely. The site looks ok to me at the moment.

Reading to deep in to things often causes us to lose site of the more important things, so I just look at the site and read anything. I noticed your image, but read the text immediately. Mainly because it's short and sweet, not because of which side it was on etc.

If you really do want to know what side however I think image then text as you can browse the image and then read the text, without each line you read ending with a picture....If that makes sense.

I've read about the way eyeballs move across the screen, but I've never been much of a believe that it effects all types of web site.

To me, Google, Yahoo, Yellow Pages, Newspapers that contain lots of different content are more likely to take notice of this because they want certain content to be seen and used sooner.

Whereas a web site like yours, that is aimed at one particular subject, I wouldn't feel needed to worry about this sort of thing at all, as users would only be at your site in the first place if they were interested in the service offered.

Personally, I don't think it really matters if the rat is on the left or right, it looks fine where it is.

On your original topic asking for website help I wrote a post about this.  Pity I closed the window as opposed to pressing the post reply button.

Rather write another long reply and run the risk of me getting bored and closing the window again.   I'll just say...

Move the rat. :)
