PSP Mini’s are Sony’s answer to the Apple iPod Apps, small games which cost £2-£4 to buy and take up little space but are still polished and fun.  Well, that’s the theory anyway.

Kahoots is one of the first games in the Minis store and the fact that it’s based on a free to play flash game might already put some people off.  But it shouldn’t.

Down the back of the Sofa
Kahoots are little creatures that live down the back of your sofa, or so Pegbeast, the wolly monster who introduces each level with a song, tells us.  Pegbeast is also the (very funny) guide to what to do in each level, starting with very simple tasks right through to brain twisting levels of frustration towards the end.

The nature of the Pegbeast
The best way to describe the gameplay is a mixture of Lemmings and Pipemania.  Like Lemmings, the Kahoots march left and right on platforms until you make a change to one of the blocks they are stepping on.  They will fall of some platforms and turn around when they reach the end of others.  There are also jumping blocks, spike blocks and other obstacles.

Where the Pipemania part comes in is the player’s moving of the blocks to solve puzzles and get the Kahoots to their destination (a door at the end of the level).  The blocks can be moved left and right or up and down in the line, but never outside of the current line.  This is hampered by bolted down blocks and the fact that while you move blocks around the Kahoots are still moving.  At times it can get pretty frantic.

Blocky Graphics
Graphically the game looks every bit like a Flash game, albeit one that has been polished.  The stop motion style of Pegbeast and the Kahoots raises it above the norm though and the sheer charm alone makes it all worth the download, conjuring memories of Bagpuss or The Clangers.

Marching on
Collecting letters and cake will earn you bonuses and points and this will go towards the score on the leaderboard.  It’s a good system that more games should hopefully adopt, giving the game some replay value in what would otherwise be a straight forward puzzle platform game.

The fact that the internet game is free shouldn’t detract from the PSP version since you can take this game anywhere and it’s bigger than the flash game with more bonuses and a style all of its own, all for less than £3.
