The Tiger Woods series has easily been one of the best, if not the best golfing game titles around.  This years instalment of the game – Tiger Woods PGA Tour ’08 is no different.

The layout and features of the game are almost identical to the ’07 Tiger Woods game as are the controls. Owners of the previous title may feel as though little has been changed or added to the game and to some extent they are correct – only some small changes have been made but they do improve the game play a little and add features that the previous titles really missed out on. There are 16 playable courses, 5 which are completely new to the series. A lot of famous faces are also included – as well as Tiger Woods you can play as or against the likes of John Daly, Chris DiMarco, Vijay Singh and even more lady golfers than before.

The improvements over last years instalment of tiger woods do improve the game quite a bit. First off there is more options with the create a golfer mode – the addition of the new Game face mode allows you to use photographs of your own face from the Xbox Vision camera or from a digital camera(via downloading the pictures from the internet using your EA games account) to construct a replica image of yourself. Now you can have very realistic versions of yourself and friends to use in the game. Adding your own face to the game is very easy – when your photograph is loaded you just identify key areas of the face when instructed and then sit back for 10 minutes while your in game face is generated.
You can then play around with your own face changing the hairstyles and facial features and then giving yourself some sunglasses and a hat to complete your golfing look.

Another added feature to the game is the EA Gamernet. This allows you to post your replay clips online and challenge other gamers to out do your shot – you can also take part in other people’s challenges as well as officially set challenges to gain points and unlock achievements. The replay of shots has also been greatly improved – now you can view each shot from various camera angles and save your best shots to upload onto Gamernet. This feature drastically increases the re-playability of the game as you'll find many different challenges being posted to Gamernet on a daily basis.

The graphics have also been improved – adopting a more photo-realistic feel to them. Owners of high definition tv’s are in for a real treat this time round with the textures used on the course itself and the crowd being far more detailed than before.
Player animations and facial expressions also look very realistic and add to the overall atmosphere created.

The in game sound is ok – nothing particularly special about it. The game soundtrack has some good music on it and the commentary can be entertaining enough at times but after a while you'll become tired of the same phrases being used over and over. Worth adding some of your own music during the game using the Xbox360's dashboard music player.

The biggest addition to the actual game play is the shot confidence feature. The game records details of every shot that you play and when re-playing each hole or similar shots  your previous shot is taken into consideration to work out your strength and weakness. This then will make your shot easier/harder to hit spot on depending on how ‘confident’ your character is on making the shot.

Putting has also taken on a change – instead of being able to  re-read the green and get an idea of where to aim you have one putt preview which will show you the path your putt will take and how far it will go. This can only be used once for each put so if you judge the layout of the green incorrectly then you'll  make putting a good bit harder from long distances.

To start the game off you can create your own character or opt to start of as a novice Tiger Woods – When creating your character you can customize your complete physical appearance and then select the type of clubs, clothing and character animations you wish to use during the game.  To begin with your characters ability quite low but as you progress through the Tiger challenge, PGA tour and other game modes your stats and ability increases and you unlock additional items that you can purchase through the pro shop.

The multiplayer aspect is much the same as before. As many as 4 players can compete offline or online in various game modes and tournaments such as Match play, stroke play, bloodsome, greensome and one ball. Online play is popular and you’ll always find someone looking for a game. During the game you can communicate with your opponent throughout and even have a quick go at trying to put them off during shots.

For me the offline game is one of the best offline multi-players around. There is plenty of enjoyment to be had and with only one player taking a shot at a time the entire screen is used – no need for any split screen to spoil the impressive graphics.

To sum things up - Tiger Woods '08 is a decent improvement over the last game, if you own the #07 game you may feel as though it is more of an update that a whole new game – it may be worth waiting until the price drops or using the previous game as a trade in towards it.
It’s a good fun game – even for a game based on the sport of golf.        :0)
Online play is a good laugh and the single player game will take a good few days worth of play before you get all the way through. Even at that though you'll probably continue to play through certain aspects over and over and spend a lot of time with the multiplayer modes.

I was expecting more changes or additions to the previous game but I guess if it ain’t broke then don’t try and fix it.
There are still room for improvements – you can almost fully customize the look of your character but there is very limited options as to how your character sounds, more options for voice types and some more clothing option/tattoos etc would have been nice. More custom characters and famous golfers would have been a bonus too.
Get Peter Alice to do the commentating and they've got the perfect golf game.  :0)

Overall it just feels like too small an small upgrade on ’07 rather than a whole new game which can be quite disappointing at times. If you don't own '07 though then you should certainly check out the demo on Xbox Live and consider this as a decent purchase.
If you are a fan of golf and you’re looking for a decent offline and online sports simulation then this is the game for you.
