You have to love gaming nights with your friends. A few beers and snacks while playing a whole list of multiplayer games till the early hours of the morning is tough to beat. While ploughing through the likes of Mario Kart Wii, Brawl and Monkey Ball is a laugh, going back to some older titles can prove just as awesome and at times hilarious too. One that stuck in my mind was South Park: Chef’s Luv Shack for the Nintendo 64.
South Park follows in the footsteps of the Mario Party titles and takes the form of a mini game marathon that involves chasing and catching chickens, running from a stampede, shooting butts in space (you heard me correctly) and more. While it would be easy to see this as a cheap knock off of the plumber’s attempts, don’t let it as South Park sets itself aside from the parties making it feel different and also a great laugh to just watch.
So how does it do that? Well as mentioned before the games are funny. Shooting butts in space couldn’t be done with Mario and everyone here feels very South Park. The overall flow and layout of the game is fast and never feels like it’s getting stagnant with three questions being asked to the contestants followed by a mini game and so on. The questions themselves are mostly for the adult audience with topics involving the male anatomy, disgusting facts and other things. Like the show it isn’t afraid to step across the tasteful line and venture onward, and that’s why we had such a blast with it. To mix things up and get players back into the game who may be trailing, bonus round occur where double points can be earned, a giant wheel spun for prizes and even answering questions to give Cartman a rear door probe. Only South Park could do this!
The mini games themselves are all great fun and with the exception of maybe one or two will have you talking trash to your friends and getting very involved. Snow Forts for example has you trying to protect your snowman with a trash can lid as you deflect a dodge ball toward the others with the last man standing winning. It’s fast paced and exciting. Another will have you blowing into a parachute as you try and avoid trees, birds and more and race to the final target at the end. Each feel different and you’ll no doubt pick your favourites. It’s a shame that there isn’t a mode to select games individually but with rounds so fast, you will likely come across certain ones with ease.
And that’s where we move onto the biggest flaw of this game. The options. There are none. You can play the main mode itself and that’s it which may surprise some. Only the four main kids are available to pick too which was surprising. Where’s Butters, Garrison and so on? This was clearly made for short bursts of fun with friends and it does accomplish that. Just don’t expect choices and modifications to the way you play.
Visually the game looks... well like a South Park episode. It’s bright, it’s colourful and the animation matches the show perfectly. There’s not much more to say. As for the music, that too matches the tone of the show with banjos playing during pie eating contests, powerful melodies during alien probes and more. The voices are all done by the proper actors including the late Isaac Hayes as Chef and even though it’s usually no more than a quick phrase or grunt from the boys it’s good that Matt and Trey have done them rather than some poor impersonator.
The game is built for multiplayer, and unless you have friends to play with then there’s no point bothering with this since you will actually be playing alone. Computers are not an option. It’s just you! However with three friends this is as fun as the Mario Party games, perhaps more so at points thanks to luck not playing as big a part as the red plumbers gatherings.
Okay so the options are next to none and it would have been nice for the questions to have been read aloud, but Chef’s Luv Shack is actually surprisingly fun for game based on a TV show. It’s humorous questions and often fun and random mini games make for a unique competitive half hour and it’s something I see myself coming back to in the near future.
