Go 3D or stick to 2D? It might have been a big choice in any other update of a classic fighting franchise but not with Street Fighter.  Ok, so there have been Street Fighter games which have gone down the 3D route (just) but Street Fighter IV is as much an answer to SFII fans need for a next gen version of the fan favourite as it is a wake up call to those who thought the 2D fighter was dead.

That said, the presentation and characters are bang up to date.  An impressive water colour style intro wows you before marching straight in to the menu and letting you choose from classic single player, on and offline multiplayer modes and the unlockable content.

It’s clear from the start that Street Fighter IV has been build from the ground up by fans of the massive second game.  Despite the new 3D visuals and anime intros this is all played on a 2 dimensional playing field and all the classic characters are represented, alongside some new (and rather interesting) challengers.

Everything you expect from a classic SF game is present, the special moves, the reliance on keeping your space protected and the strengths and weaknesses playing off each other.  The change is in providing players with Focus attacks when their bar fills up, unleashing an almost unstoppable attack which looks amazing.

The biggest addition to the single player, though, comes in the form of new real challengers who are playing online being able to fight against you while you play the arcade mode.  This is supposed to simulate someone coming up to you in the arcade and sticking some money in to compete against you while you play.  It takes a bit of getting used to, but it actually works seamlessly and provides a new feel to an age old game mode.

Online on PS3 is lag free and finding a game is easy.  Aside from finding games the online mode is pretty much the same as the old offline vs modes, but without someone there to physically hit after you lose or see their face if you win!  Rankings are kept up to date, but with so many pros out there, don’t expect to be on the leaderboards anytime soon.

Street Fighter IV is a fan’s dream.  Ok, so the anime might not be the world’s best and the new boss, Seth is very annoying and generic, but all in all it’s a fantastic game which rightly takes the mantle of best fighter from it’s famous father.
