It's coming home! It's coming home! Silent Hill's coming home! Or not, as the case may be. Because, butchery of Baddiel and Skinner's song aside,  Silent Hill Homecoming, the first current-gen Silent Hill game, is a long, long way from home. The first four Silent Hill games were all developed by Konami's Team Silent in Japan, and they were pretty good. Granted, Silent Hill 4 went a bit funny halfway through the game, but Silent Hills 1, 2 and 3 were excellent. Silent Hill Homecoming, on the other hand, has been farmed out to another development team in America, and it suffers as a result.

That's not to say the game is a horrible pile of cack, nor that American programmers aren't capable of pulling off a decent survival horror game. It's just that Silent Hill: Homecoming is very much survival horror by the numbers, and certainly doesn't fit in with the rest of the series Silent Hill. In fact, it seems to draw upon the movie more than the previous games, with the design of Pyramid Head - who serves no useful purpose in the game - and the otherworld transition having been lifted straight from the film.

As for the game's storyline, you've got a typically conflicted and guilt ridden antagonist, who's roaming around the town trying to find his brother. And there's plenty of monsters to kill, although they're not really as disturbing as those found in previous games.  But you'll have seen most of the locations before in previous games - abandoned hospital, abandoned hotel, and so forth. And the game is never really that scary or unsettling. If you're a Silent Hill completist, Homecoming is worth renting. If, on the other hand, you're looking for your next survival horror fix, I'd recommend you save your money and given Resident Evil 5 a go instead.
