It's Fallout 3 expansion time again! To be honest, the previous expansion - or mini expansion - Operation Anchorage, was a bit rubbish. It essentially ignored all the RPG elements of Fallout 3 and sent you out on a duck hunt. The Pitt is marginally better, and takes place in the city of Pittsburg.

Despite not having been directly hit by any bombs, Pittsburg or The Pitt as it's now known, has got major problems. Nearly all the city's inhabitants have been affected by the fallout from the bombs that hit DC. And the ones that aren't dying could still end up turning into mutated monsters known as 'Troggs'.

You wander into The Pitt in response to a distress signal sent by one of the city's inhabitants, entering it via an underground railroad. You can wander around The Pitt, but there's really not much to do - there's no shops, and there's only a single questline.

It does look good, though, the fire and steel theme contrasting nicely against Fallout 3's main theme. The quests themselves aren't all that taxing, usually involving killing things, or collecting items.  The only new enemies are the Troggs, and there's only one new weapon, the gruesome but not all that impressive Auto Axe.

The one good thing about The Pitt is the way the decisions you have to make are handled. For once, there's no black and white choice here. Choosing either one of the two branching paths will leave you wondering if you did the right thing or not.

The Pitt is a lot better than Operation Anchorage, but you're still being charged six quid or so for content that adds maybe two or three hours gameplay to Fallout 3. I for one would sooner have a fully blown expansion pack like The Shivering Isles. Maybe Broken Steel will continue the improvement and end up being the first Fallout 3 expansion pack to provide real value for money.
