Without question, the biggest film of the year. Grossing over 70 million dollars in its first weekend in America. Will the caped crusader be as big in England?
If you never saw Batman Begins then first off, you missed a great film, and secondly, you will have some blanks that won’t be filled in. So I would recommend watching the first instalment before you set off on your 2 and a half hour cinema experience with Batman.
The film starts with a Bank robbery, as the crooks masked as clowns make their way to the vault, you can hear them talk about the man who hired them to do the job – the Joker. Within a few minutes of the robbery, one of the hired goons begins to kill his accomplices and ends up getting away by himself on a school bus, making a swift exit into the local rush of school buses leaving the city with a lot of money that belongs to the Mafia! Before we see the vilan jump onto the back of the bus, he takes off his mask to reveal he was in fact, the Joker.
Not long into the film is it before we see Bruce Wayne as Batman, taking out bad guys and trying to prevent the large number of “copycats” that have emerged in the city, people trying to look and act like Batman, but using guns and other various weapons.
Within little time Batman learns more about the Joker and gets to see him via the CCTV within the Bank he robbed. But focus turns to another new character in the film / series. Harvey Dent, the new District Attorney for Gotham City, who soon stamps his authority around and puts large numbers of crooks and mafia associates behind bars. Dent soon becomes a public idol and is seen as a much loved figure in power. He is keen to meet and work along with Batman on taking more of the “scum” out of Gotham. Played by Aaron Eckhart, he is comfortable in his role and allows the film to flow smoothly and naturally.
With three big figures in the film at the current time everything is set for some huge events and great plot twists. I really do not want to progress far into the story as this film has so much to offer and has been anticipated by so many of you that I don’t want to be the one to ruin this fabulous experience for you!
I would like to just take a moment to give a huge amount of credit to the late Heath Ledger who plays the Joker, he is in my opinion the best villain I have ever had the pleasure to witness in a film. During the 2 hours you get to enjoy his performance, you never see him as Heath, but only as the Joker, he made the role his own and the whole cinema was laughing and applauding him. Which they would have done even if he was still alive. It was a magnificent performance within a very talented cast.
This is to take nothing away from Christian Bale, he has reformed batman into the Dark Knight he should be, I have not been to see a film which had me as engrossed in the growing relationship between a Hero and a Villain, it is truly a great film and story to follow.
The movie has had big reviews, and I can see why. Everything about the film just feels right, the filming is dark and gritty when night falls on Gotham and makes the viewer believe it is not a nice place to be in. The editing is great, no random jumps, but just a smooth flowing, well shot film that has a great story and cast. Every director’s dream has finally been achieved. It is the Pinnacle of films and must be seen by anyone with a remote interest. It is so good I am going to see it again and when the 2 and a half hours were up I was gutted, I wanted more!
A must go see film with everything you need. Let’s all hope the third is announced soon! Thanks for reading
