Original Post:
FYI

A random power cut hit pimlico approximately 8:45pm tonight.

Apparently, the power will not be restored tonight as they have to dig the road up and find the cable that blew.

Approximately 140 properties are affected, along with traffic lights.  Halves of buildings are out, but the other halves ok, such that basement and ground ok/out, first floor and above, the opposite.

Unless you have internet connection sharing on your mobile, I guess you're temporarily out of luck.

How strange. Have they said why they had to go to such extremes?

Very strange indeed.

You would have thought that the entire property would have been affected.

Indeed you would. No reason why the whole building would not be connected through the same line no?

Maybe the way the buildings a set up means that the priority goes towards the top half of the buildings :D
Hmmm...
"Are you sure?"

If it was only mains power that's gone the phone will still be working!

All you need to do is start up a laptop (on battery power) connected to a trusty USB modem ;¬)

Don't you believe it - this isn't so very strange. I live in a street where 'power cuts' affect:

1. One half and not the other.
2. Next door is off and we are on
3. We are off, next door to the left is on, next door to the right is off the shop next door to them is on.
4. You can now perm any three out of four properties, because we don't know who is off or who is on.
5. We have a rota list to establish who is off and therefore who we can call on for a kettle of hot water etc.

Two years ago, we were the only ones off and had to be 'linked' to next door with 'big battery jump leads' to get a reduced power input for two days! Don't put the washing machine and the tumble dryer on at the same tiem we were advised!

You city-dwellers obviously have it too easy...ha ha

You will *not* believe this...

It's just happened again within the last 20 minutes except its the opposite half of the building thats been knocked out.

Same thing - 140 properties affected.
