It's a barrel of laughs. I'll maybe go start a new post through there. To be honest, I'm probably best buying a book for doing GUIs. It's a total pain.
If you want a fairly painless intro, my Java module at uni last term might help. All the lecture notes are online and pretty thorough.. check it out at Glasgow's CS Notes.

Morning all.
Working from home today, but realised when I got home yesterday that I'd left my mobile at work. As it's a work mobile and used for people to contact me, I'm debating driving in, but that defeats part of the reason I work from home (cost of fuel and environment).

Can anyone remember an online shoot-em-up game that was posted on here? It was played with stickmen and was based in an office.
Found it. Stick Arena.

Definite agreement here, I have been shocked by some things people have said about me, especially from my female friends. Although being told I could have had 'like 16 girlfriends' since I got to university if I wasn't often drunk on nights out might have been an exaggeration!
As for trying to get jobs and 'selling yourself'... now, that can be quite difficult. Although I think my rather bare CV may have something to do with it (Plus I'm no good at writing the damn things.)

Yeah, I haven't played much as a lot of sites are getting rid of their freerolls or putting raked hand requirements on them. I've been playing quite well when I have played. My instincts have been mostly good.

I know what you mean. It's the same when it comes to relationships. Nearly every girl tells me I'm attractive and perfect boyfriend material, but I just don't see it. If I were, why have been practically single for 20 years? *accepts he is still young...but using it as a point illustration We all view ourselves differently and so do people who look at you. I have a 1:1 with my acting branch manager tomorrow to see how I have gotten on with the till and to discuss training etc. Looking forward to getting off the till for a bit actually. I think I've developed an allergy to large amounts of cash!

I also hate the question "How do you feel about that?" My mind just goes blank.
I suppose that's my problem really. My current status isn't great and I haven't really achieved much since school, if anything at all.
When people tell me what I'm like, I usually don't believe them. I guess I don't see myself as the person they describe, particularly if it's glowing praise.

Unfortunately, you need to sell yourself these days, even after the interview. Most jobs tend to have reviews, 121s etc which mean that you'll need to keep on your toes as far as showing your boss what you bring to the company.
I've been through good and bad stages, even within the one company, and after a while you learn to play the system for your benefit. It's all about who you know and pushing small, easy achievable goals in to the open so that you can mark them down as achievements. Doing favours for people helps, as you'll have a network of people willing to sing your praises before long, but this has to be balanced with being able to cope with your workload, something I've not long mastered.
As for personal profiling, you really need to ask other people (family, friends) what they think your positive attributes are, stick them on a piece of paper and commit them to memory, then when it comes to interviews, just pretend you were someone else telling them about you (if that makes sense).

It is a difficult question that most people find difficult. I usually give my current status and then just mention a few things that I have achieved since school (perhaps over-emphasising bits that may be key to the role I'm going for) and just hope I've got an answer that is true and satisfies them.
Beginning to get nervy about work again now. Yesterday I went through a phase of counting £10 notes as £20 notes and vice versa. Luckily I caught myself doing it!

I have the same problem. I really dislike people asking me questions about myself because i've got nothing good to say and it makes me uncomfortable so i tend to self-depricate. It's a major reason why i have such problems with job interviews.

Now, I'm not known as being particularly conversational. To be honest, I've never been very good at it.
Anyway, I was recently asked "Tell me about yourself." I've never been able to answer that. I try and think about what to say and nothing springs to mind. With everything that's happened, particularly in the last 5 years, it would be difficult to answer without being very depressing and if I went the other way and tried to list my better qualities (if I have any), I'd feel like I was boasting about them.
I guess there really isn't a lot about me which is interesting enough to strike up a conversation.

Well, it made me smile to hear that :p
I've never handled so much money in my life :o I'm sure the reason I'm beginning to enjoy work is the constant rush of cocaine residue off the notes.
And Nin, I'd like a girl to come up and say woof to me. Providing she wasn't actually a dog. Beginiing to not really care if it were in front of my family now either...

My ability to attract the nutters never ceases to amaze me.
I was doing some shopping in Tesco's when this woman walks up to me, gets uncomfortably close, looks me in the eye, looks me up and down and then says "Woof!" before walking off smiling.
I wouldnt have cared but my mum and sister were standing right behind me at the time. They have been merciless.
