Fast and the Furious 3: Tokyo Drift

7/10

Its rubbish really. The story is pathetic and the set pieces are unbelievable (the Japanese Yakuza settling a problem with some punk kid by having a car race? I dont think so), but the only reason you would go to see this film is for the cars anyway and the races all look great. It was as fun to watch as the other two, possibly even better than #2 and there is a nice surprise at the end for fans of the series.

If you are wanting some great acting, a heart wrentching story and some brilliantly detailed drama, then this isnt for you. If you want Japanese girls in short skirts driving customised sports cars then I think you'll love it.

Just looked at the spoiler content for this thread and had to find this review I wrote (very poor review really compared to today's standards).  I had to find it as can't even remember watching a film of that name, nor remembering writing about it!.

It did say I was heading back from a heavy night at the pub....which may be the reason why I don't remember it.

Has anybody seen AntiChrist (I think that's what it's called) with Willem Defoe?  Meant to be quite graphic.  May see it saturday (that's if it is even released yet), so will post a review if it is any good.

Pretty much what I thought of it. Wouldn't really recommend it.

In the last 10 days

Ghost Town 6/10
Very slow start but it ends up being quite enjoyable

Requiem For A Dream
I'm not rating it, it's not entertainment. The most thoroughly unpleasant film I've ever seen.

12 Angry Men 10/10
I don't like giving 10's but it's a classic

Let The Right One In 9/10
My favourite film of recent years. I'm only marking it down 1 for the CGI cats

Night of the Living Dead 8/10
A great example of what you can do with a story and no money.

Dawn of the Dead 10/10
I'm really not big on horror at all but I love Romero and this an just outstanding, iconic film.

Day of the Dead 7/10
It looks like crap and the acting is abysmal but the story is there.

Land of the Dead 8/10
I really enjoyed Land, it's a different film to the others and it's heavyhanded with it's point but still fun

Diary of the Dead 5/10
Without doubt the weakest of the 5. Terrible acting, heavyhanded and just not that interesting. Doesn't feel like part of the set but it's not as bad on 2nd viewing.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford 6/10
History isn't always as interesting as it could be. Kind of disappointing for the build-up.

Revolutionary Road 8/10
I suspect I'm short changing it with an 8, because it's pretty much flawless. Outstanding performances, great soundtrack, thoroughly depressing story. Anyone getting married should see this first.

Milk 8/10
A little biased and a little contrived but that can be forgiven, highly enjoyable.

I watched Antichrist, starring Willem Dafoe as "He" and Charlotte Gainsbourg as "She", from such things as Science of Sleep!
Directed by Lars von Trier

Very good!

Um?

Offensive language?

By copying the synopsis of a critically acclaimed, Cannes award winning film from IMDB?

Saw it 7 years ago, absolute quality. The performance by Keisha Castle Hughes is astnoshing considering it was her début, look out for her speech at the end.

The Godfather 8/10

2nd Best Film of All-Time? Nin says W T F? It's not even the best film I've seen this year.

Seeing as you won't let me use the letters W T F,  I improvised.

i was going to set up a topic for some cookery tips that freeola's forum users could provide, i even came up with a name

Freeola's Unified Cookery Kitchen and its members would be:

Freeola's Unified Cookery Kitcheners.

Nut after some thought i didn't bother.

Anyway movies:

Babel- A compelling movie that has 3 completely unrelated groups of people merging into one story. Strangely compelling and enjoyable.

7/10

Miami Vice- Hmm, yes, well... I didn't really pay much attention to this one. Its a basic undercover rubbish police story with drugs that ends with an ok shoot out. Nothing remotely exciting or compelling.

Not posted anything in here for a while so...

Echelon Conspiracy

This started out quite promisingly.  Some guy receives a mobile phone anonymously in mail and then starts receiving text messages which appear to show knowledge of future events.  At that point theres lots of possibilities.  As things progress you realise its a total rip off of another movie (no names to avoid spoilers) and barely has an original idea of its own.  The lead role follows a similar theme.  They couldnt create their own character so they stole one from a sitcom.  Shane West appears to have been hired to act the entire movie doing an impression of Chandler from Friends.  Its really quite bizarre watching him do all these Matthew Perry mannerisms.

6/10

Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past

And speaking of rip-offs...
Matthew McConaughey and yet another spoof on A Christmas Carol.  Having watched An American Carol last year, literally anything was going to be a step up so this was mildly watchable.  Entirely predictable romantic comedy of course, McConaughey plays himself (badly), gets visited by 3 ghosts and so on.  If you dont have an hour and 40 minutes to spare you can actually watch the trailer as it covers the whole plot and all the key moments.
Oh and Michael Douglas plays a ghost.  He looked about 90 and like he was starting to decompose. I'm not sure this was the work of  makeup though.

5/10

Adventureland

Whatever you do, dont read the description or watch the trailer for this movie.  It does nothing but lie!  Its portrayed as a comedy but basically its a "teen-angst" movie.  Nerd cant afford to go to college so goes to work in theme park for the summer, meets girl blah blah blah....  There were a few comic moments, not enough to earn the title of comedy though.

3/10

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

You know that scene they do in movies where the protagonist holds a dead/injured person in their arms, the camera cuts to an aerial shot and then theres the cry of anguish and the camera zooms out??  It should be banned from all movies.  Anyway...
Disjointed.  Describes it perfectly for me.  Its almost like they wanted to make a movie about Wolverine but didnt really want  anything to do with the source material.  So its neither true to the comics or to the previous X-Men movies.  Still Hugh Jackman jumps around alot and kills people.  So its easy to forgive it for not being the greatest representation of the material.

7/10

Frost / Nixon

Thankfully the film is nothing like the real events so it was mildly interesting.  I've never seen this mentioned in any reviews but I didnt think the portrayal of David Frost was entirely fair.  They make him out to be a bit of an idiot and suggest his (american) researchers are the real brains.  And Nixon comes off pretty well all things considered.

6/10

State of Play

Mixed feelings about this.  On the one hand its quite a good movie.  On the other hand, I really hate Russell Crowe.  If they insist on putting him in films, he should at least end up dead.  Mr. Smug plays a news reporter who ends up investigating the murder of a researcher who works for his friend, a US Congressman (Ben Affleck) who is part of a committee looking into defense spending.  Cue conspiracies, secrets, lies and betrayals.

Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus
I watched this film ages ago, but i forgot to post a rating up for it.

The reason i watched this film is because it was born as a tragedy. I don't believe anyone has made this film with oscars in mind, it's an absolute farce, and it's soooo funny. Although made as a serious tragedy film, the comedy element is rife among the scenes. For example

I'm going to give this film 10/10 JUST so you'll watch it!

It's that terrible, i can't even write a serious review on it!

Well that's the whole comedy value :D They've made it as a serious film, when *secretly* i think it's been made to be a big flop for a joke. As i've said before, it's got Lorenzo Lamas in it- the benchmark of bad films.

I did watch casino royale and whilst i enjoyed it, something made me snigger. The story is a bit silly, if this was a classic movie with sean connery, this would look utterly, uttlerly stupid.

Beat the super villian at a game of cards to get info? What the hell? when did 007 become a super casino player?

Still great movie. Now i have to sit annoyed by the fact my vcr didn't record the last 45 minuates! to add insult to injury the reason why was because i didn't put a bloody tape into the vcr!

I signed up to lovefilm not long ago and I've started catching up on the YEARS of films I've missed, mostly comedies (I don't think comedies are suited to the cinema and I didn't want to buy them in case they were dirt) so I just watched Starsky and Hutch.

Not too bad, not sure it HAD to be a comedy but it had its funny bits.

Lies & Illusions

Christian Slater plays a writer of a relatonship book.  On the evening he proposes to his girlfriend, she gets kidnapped and is later presumed dead.  A year later he discovers the girlfriend isnt who he thought.  Add into the mix another girlfriend, some diamonds, Cuba Gooding Jr and probably some of the most inappropriate backing music you can imagine.  Anyway, truely awful.  Production was incredibly amateurish. It easily passed that line where it wasnt just bad but so bad it was funny.  It got worse as the movie progressed too, at first I thought they were poking fun at the genre especially with the bizarrely matched music.  Sadly they were serious though.
