Olympics 2008 thread...
Full Olympics Medal Table from the BBC.

GB's roll of honour (again from the BBC).

I've been quite impressed with the opening ceremony - I watched most of it live this afternoon and I'm watching the highlights as I type this.

I hope 'we' can pull off something as respectable in 2012!!!

The BBC say 4bn people will be watching!
I was surprised to see Sara Brightman had got in there singing the Olympics anthem (good for album sales!).

I did a Google and some Chinese sites say she is from the USA! :¬(

Let's hope it's a good one - it's certainly started rather well...

I'm glad the Ruskies pipped us to thrid in the table, as it gives us room to imrpove in 4 years time.

If we had got third this year, there's no way we would have been able to get 2nd in 4 years, and so it would have been a bit of a disapointment as people would be expecting too much.

hurrah. we can continue to rape the world of medals in cycling events unopposed.

Still we would have won a hell of a lot more golds. the 10k free style swimming we were pipped to the post and we fell down to silver position. Had we won them all we would be seeing an event glorious to behold.

BMX, what a farce.

Indeed, considering we came 10th last year we've really improved a lot. If only that BMX girl didn't mess things up, then we might have got our 20th gold.

I'm not surprised there are countries going after the cycling coach. Apart from the BMX event, we were leading by quite a margin in the cycling events. I'm glad he's decided to stay.

True, although you have to admit we totally kicked ass in the cycling. We were so good that we were winning gold AND silver in the same events :D Brit vs Brit.

I'm surpised none of you mentioned that Cuban attacking the referee. Now he and his coach have got a life time ban :/

If we had been in the third spot we would have been very happy, but we're so weak in some areas we lose out very badly. Football in GB has slowly been declining and i doubt we'll see it recover anytime soon.

The footballers could learn a thing or 2 from the winners at the olympics.

I disagree with Garin. I think footballers earn far too much money and our olympic athletes hardly earn a thing.

I also think there should be more games lessons in school. When I was a kid we didn't have fancy gym equipment like video game cycling machines. Also they should get rid of R.E and replace it with Drivers Ed.

no. Its there job to win. I expect them to do a good job of it. My job is to watch it on tv or on the internet. I've done that well. Whats their excuse?

Because the event is open to professional tennis players. :)  The footballers arent amateurs either.

I think its very hard to make distincts these days.  None of the top track and field stars are amateurs.  I suspect boxing maintains its status because of the strong standing of the amateur boxing associations and the clear distinction between them and the professional associations.

well, at least we didn't leave empty handed. But we need more gold! atheletics teams have been rubbish. So has englands football team. If we didn't have top notch cyclists or sailers we would have been much, much lower in the table.

BMX was a travasty.

That's good news! - this was the first bit of taekwondo I'd watched (live this morning). The camera's clearly showed the 'head kick' but not all of the judges saw it.

It didn't sound as if you were allowed to appeal against this - but as the BBC report she "received an unprecedented reprieve".

edit: "It's all kicking off in the taekwondo" only just saw that!!! :¬)

The last few days have been a bit of a farce in atheletics and especially in the BMX. it was crushing to see her fall and in some ways i'm a bit annoyed and find satisfaction at times that the fall might have injured her.

Atheletics What the hell happened? the rely teams have been disqualified for a cack pass that no professional should make. Hang your heads gb atheletics team, i demand lashes for them ALL.

Yeah the other 2 boxers were well outdone. Jeffries in particular might need to look at his tactics in future and consider throwing punches as part of them.

Just seen the relay. The have to pass the baton before they cross a certain point. Neither did

We've 3 boxers left. Degale got into a final earlier and the other 2 guys should be up shortly. To be honest i dont like Degale but he really should win gold. The guy he's facing is Cuban but less than impressive.

There should have been after we spent £30,000 on a replica course so she could practice on. Oh well maybe in 2012, still I don't know why its an Olympic event.

How are we doing in the other events? A gold for canoeing, thats a first. :) And one of the boxers has got through to the final which means atleast a silver.

I've accepted that Russia will over take us, lets beat the Aussies and the Germans.

A few let downs yesterday and so far today, people have mentioned them, like the BMX rider.

The relay was the biggest joke, USA and GB both looked like it was their first time racing. We are defending champions who didn't qualify. Not good

It seems that most of those expected to take gold have failed.
As for the BMX rider, she was 2nd and instead of accepting that, went for broke with a risky move on the corner and clipped the French riders backwheel.

...

Why the f**k am i discussing BMX at this time of the morning

You get easily distracted so it's probably for the best :)

Another gold and another silver. We did have the BMX event today but it was cancelled due to heavy rain. I think we're guranteed a gold in that and we need it as the Russians are catching up.

Hmm that womens diving sounds interesting :D

I just noticed that we have 3 boxers that have qualified their quarter-final bout so are guranteed to win atleast a bronze each. There's 4 days left, it'd be nice to win some more golds and keep Russia out of the top 3 for the first time.
