How are you supposed to advance in this game when the putting is very nearly impossible to master. I can understand the left/right tips but what on earth does the long/short tips mean?

Long and short are similar to left and right. Long means you move the marker forward, essentially adding more power to the putt and short means you move the marker back, so you have less power on the putt.
