Should Final Fantasy VII be remade?

I thought I would jump at the chance but after thinking about it: No, it shouldn't.  Reasons being that while FFVII was a great game at the time, gaming has moved on... If they made some sort of new game which was set in the FFVII universe but didnt follow the same story, or the original story seen from someone elses point of view... Sephiroth springs to mind but I doubt they would make a villian the main character.  But it does sound strangely appealing :]

Personally, I have gone off final fantasy games a lot in the last few years... It hasnt been the same since FFX in my opinion.  That game remains my favourite FF of them all.  I also really liked FFIX, but again: at the time.  I would play FFX again, FFXII  I bought, opened, played for a few hours and just really disliked it... a tiny thing like not being able to switch the invert on the camera on or off really put me off though.  Oh yeah and FFVIII... not my cup of tea!

I havent seen much about FFXIII really, I kind of lost hope with the series.  Hopefully my faith will be restored over the next few years.

For future game I would love it if they made it more like a massive world to play in, with more intelligent NPCs and just a generally Deeper experience.. not that FF isnt deep already but it just has so much more potential if they went (slightly) more for an Oblivion type approach.  Keep the amazing stroylines obviously, but imagine if you could Choose what happened next and directly impact the story instead of it being set in stone.  Bring back something similar to the Orb system of leveling up seen in FFX, Also I'd love if they brought back the summons from FFX... I'd love to see Anima again in high def :)

FFVIII was just too complicated for my pre-teen mind to utilise properly. I remember something about junctioning, which meant if you used some magic source here, it did something good or bad to another stat there... Pah.

Also, wasn't there some kind of testing scheme that determined how much gil you got? That was lame.

I heard too many mixed reviews on XII for me to get into it, and that my PS2 was packaged away somewhere and I couldn't be bothered.

VII was a classic for me as it was my first Final Fantasy experience, and IMO, it just worked. The characters were fun to play with and I always cared about what they said etc. The materia system was great too as it allowed a nice variety and a little more strategy to the game.

Second to this is, of course, FFX. A beautiful upgrade in graphics, coupled with some pretty decent voicing and brilliant story line (almost had me in tears with the ending :P). This game is still my favourite PS2 game of all time, and from here on will probably stay that way.

X-2 sucked ultimately. I mean, while it was nice to see what happened to Yuna, Wakka and the gang... I think I'd of prefered they left the whole Tidus thing alone.

... that was rushed =

I just enjoyed the change in FFVIII, even if it wasn't the best battle system there has been. Got to disagree with the story criticisms though - kept me playing for hours.

As for FFXII having a poor battle-system, then I guess if you're a stalwart turn-based fan then yes, it does. I like the mix of real-time attacking with turn-based sensibilities that FFXII introduced.

Each to their own I suppose.

It was ok til the end of disc 2, nothing mind blowing but i didn't mind playing it though i was pretty much playing it for the sake of it, however when they started with all that space bull i just couldn't be bothered with it anymore

I've never been sure about VIII as i thought i could be too harsh on after following VII. Looking back i think VIII started off well and then they traded a potentially great villain for someone totally crap (Edea for Ultemecia), after that the story really was non-descript.
Oh and the battle system in XII sucks donkey balls.

Already stated my opinion on FFVIII before (boring characters and story, though woo for Quistis etc etc) FFXII also falls into that bracket of boring characters and a story i didn't really care for, which if you're going to be playing through it for 50 odd hours is a bit of a drawback. Add to that the horrid battle system and it's rated amongst my least favourite RPG's ever.

Give me good ol turn based action anyday, Square can keep their rubbish new systems as long as Sakaguchi-san and Mistwalker will carry on showing them how to actually do an RPG along with their own Enix partners with the greatness that was DQ8. Now if only NIS would go multi-platform i wouldn't need to buy a PS3 :-(

They need to mix the two. Have the wonderfully awesome gameplay of KH2 with the other stuff from KH.

I promised myself not to get into this... not after last time. Got the warrant and everything from before. But, personally speaking, FFVIII was the business. FFX-2 was pretty lame. But FFXII is immense. Lost Odyssey is pretty good, but I can't help feeling that turn-based games need to get themselves together (which LO *just* manages) or do the FFXII-twist. I really wanted to love Blue Dragon, for example, but I just couldn't.

For Nin, I guess you'll just have to live with the next FF. They seem to go in turns of old-style magick, then new-modern-futuristic, and back again. FFVI to FFVII / VIII, FFIX to FFX / FFX-2, FFXII to XIII.

I just want a decent adventure game for the PSP.  Usually FF are decent titles, so may give it ago when I get a job!

Its been ages since i played I and II. They dont really have much regarding a plot. You're told to repair/find some crystals at the start and thats pretty much it. You've got to work the rest out.

That is true. Put it this way, if Zelda went the same way that Final Fantasy is heading, there would be complete outrage from the Nintendo fanboys. Can you remember the fuss they made about cell-shading for Wind Waker. I think they would explode if you gave Link a gun.

And all those games sucked. Guns and blades with guns are not a good sign for a FF game. Though reading the previews of FFXIII along with how poor the recent ones have been i'm not holding much hope for it. At least Mistwalker are showing Square how to do it with Lost Odyssey.

Blade being the operative word

You should never cite X-2 in any FF argument.

I've not got that far into XII but i'm going to assume theyre not flashy and he doesn't twirl them around like a tw@.
Watching the XIII trailer and seeing what i assume are main characters jumping around flashing their guns like some Jedi on a sugar rush is not what FF is supposed to be.

Gah, wrote a long post, then it disappeared.

Don't go with the PC version - the hoops you have to go through to get it to work with any modern graphics card are immense (and that's with a legit copy of the game I bought). Aside from the myriad of exciting glitches like upside down video, super-boss-crashes, and a game clock that runs at about 1/3 speed, it's naff with a keyboard. I got a PS1 controller adapter and, tbh, wish I had just restarted my PS1 copy.

To someone else's comment, guns in FF are hardly new. Squall, lead in FFVIII, had his gunblade. Yuna in FFX-2, basically a gunner. Balthier and his guns in FFXII - pretty bad-ass.

Anyhow, back on topic. A remake isn't what we need. It's more thought-out areas, an even better battle system, and fantastic storytelling & voiceacting. FFXII-2, anyone?

For the PC anyway, you can download an "Ultimate" edition of FF7 thats had the video re-encoded so its not so big and it includes some fan made patches to help it work with XP.

That's the reason why I'll never get to play FF7. I'm not forking out £20 for a PS1 game, no matter how good it is, probably because I don't have £20.

A remake would be good if they don't play around with the gameplay too much, just so I could see what the fuss is about.

PS1 versions are a collectors item and are selling for £20 in the shops and more online. Getting it for windows? Pretty much impossible.

If you still hold this statement after seeing the Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailers, I will have your head.

As far as remaking VII, I don't really see the point, people would hate it. You'd have to keep the story-line the same otherwise fans would be outraged in some way, so then all emphasis is on graphics, which would look lovely, no doubt, but people would get very bored of  the game play quite quickly.

Well, maybe not the die hard fans, but everyone else would. Yes it was fantastic and brilliant game way back in 1996(ish) but to todays standards, I'm not sure it could offer enough to get new gamers playing it, so I don't think they'd generate enough profit from it to allow a remake to be made.

If you love the game, you can buy it for Windows and PS1 for like a fiver :D

Yeah but it wasnt the lead character and it was attached to his arm so it doesn't count. FF games should be about swords and magic, not bloody guns.

Yeah, guns do seem to have spoilt the idea of it.

Sadly to say, it's hard to go back to FF7 when you've played things like Blue Dragon and others on the next next gen (so far back I can't believe it).  Great game, but I can get to grips with it now because of the graphics.  I don't usually rate a game on graphics, but it's hard when there is a HUGE difference.  I'm sure I will play it again as I loved it, but it'll be the initial 5 hours of the game that will be the toughest, as it'll mean I'll have to adapt back to the PSX me.

As for remaking it, I'm undecided. A lot of people havent or wont play it because graphically it's 10 years old. I used to be for remaking because of those people but now, f**k 'em, i hate graphics tarts. I'd sort of like it remade or reissued because i wont have anything to play it on once my PS2 is dead.
Oh and FF XIII looks utter s**t. Guns in a Final Fantasy game? Shame on you Squaresoft, you're dead to me.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Nintendo DS release, or maybe s part of a compilation of FF games on the Xbox or Wii, but to change its looks would be like updating the original Goldeneye to have Halo 3-esque graphics. It wouldn't be the same game.

It's a quality classic. I was glad I was able to pick it up brand new on my PS2 last year - even if I still haven't found the time to get through the first disc :P

(If anyone on here remembers what I was like when FFVII was out on PSX then they'd be shocked to see me praising the original game...)

This is in my top 5 games too (got to have gran turismo, wipeout and Pro Evo in there!)

It should not be remade. The only thing they could improve is the graphics - and I think flashy graphics would spoil the appeal somewhat. I like the plinky music so that can't be updated either. I have it on PC and Playstation, you can pick up a PS1 with FF7 on ebay for under 30 quid and play it as it was intended.

A "patched" version with all the typos fixed would be nice, though.

Don't really see the point.

Making another FF game concentrating on the depth of storyline, the pick-up-and-play combat system with subtle masteries, the vastness of gameplay, the epic nature and all that other crap that made FF7 such an awesome game, should be the priority. Not re-hashing old games for new systems.

The focus MUST be taken away from just making games look really pretty.
