It's here on the 13 th. Maybe one of the most anticipated games for the PC, and certainly for MMORPGs this year.
Wrath of the Lich King, any World of Warcraft fan, maybe even most of the newbies to the game will be able to tell you what's in store for WoW in the next expansion pack. Even so, I wan't to go through the points as it keeps my excitement going:
We've got the new hero class, Death Knight:
Now, even now some people are a bit confused as the rules for this new class, so here goes. Once your account has a character on it that has reached level 55 or above, the Death Knight class will be unlocked for you. Currently, blizz rules state that you may only have one DK per realm per account. That is to say that on one single account, you can only have a single Death Knight on any one realm. For example, I'm on the Turalyon realm, so I can only create a single DK there, if I want to make another one without deleting my original, he/she would have to be created on a different realm like Earthen Ring.
The term hero class does not mean that the death knight will be over powered in comparison to any other class that already exists. It simply means that the DK class' game mechanics are different to regular classes and in a lot of cases will be a bit more difficult.
The DK class will be a hybrid class of Tank/DPS, a DK will not be able to use shields of any kind, but they will be able to wear plate armour and even dual wield if required.
When you create your DK, he/she will start at level 55 and the starting area will be in the Eastern Plaguelands, with a variety of spells and abilities that will be available from creation. The DK will start with full uncommon gear, and supposedly once you finish your starting quests, you will have full rare gear.
DKs will not use mana, rage or energy. Instead, they will use a new system called runes. There are three rune types known as blood, frost and unholy that will be used up as you use abilities or spells. Naturally, blood abilities will use blood runes, frost use frost and unholy use unholy. But some later abilities will use a mixture of two or even all three. Runes will "recharge" themselves after 10 secs of inactive use.
Similar to rage, is the runic power that also plays a part in the DK class. When you use runes against a foe, you will generate a certain amount of runic power. Runic power is usually used in conjuction with another ability to increase it effectiveness, many abilities will say "... using all availiable runic power..." for example, if you have lots, expect to do lots of damage.
taken from wowwikki.com:
Death Knights will have a unique enchant-like system called Runeforging[12]. Death Knights will learn Runeforging in the start area, after a few quests. Runeforging is just like enchanting. When near a Runeforge you will be able to click a spell in your spell book, just like enchanting, and then choose an "enchant" to perform on the weapon. Runeforging will overwrite enchants.
Currently there are 8 different 'enchants' you can place on your weapon.
* Rune of Cinderglacier: Affixes your rune weapon with a rune that has a chance to increase the damage by 20% for your next 2 attacks that deal Frost or Shadow damage.
* Rune of Lichbane: Affixes your rune weapon with a rune that adds 2% extra weapon damage as Fire damage or 4% versus Undead targets.
* Rune of Razorice: Affixes your rune weapon with a rune that adds 2% extra weapon damage as Frost damage and has a chance to increase Frost vulnerability.
* Rune of Spellbreaking: Affixes your rune weapon with a rune that deflects 2% of all spell damage and reduces the duration of Silence effects by 50%.
* Rune of Spellshattering: Affixes your rune weapon with a rune that deflects 4% of all spell damage and reduces the duration of Silence effects by 50%.
* Rune of Swordbreaking: Affixes your rune weapon with a rune that increases Parry chance by 2% and reduces the duration of Disarm effects by 50%.
* Rune of Swordshattering: Affixes your rune weapon with a rune that increases Parry chance by 4% and reduces the duration of Disarm effects by 50%.
* Rune of the Fallen Crusader: Affixes your rune weapon with a rune that has a chance to heal you for 3% and increase total strength by 30% for 15 sec.
Level cap will raised to 80
A predictable one, but none the less, interesting. Blizzard have had an incredibly arduous task of trying to keep the classes balanced, mainly focusing on the level 70s this proved to be a lot harder than they thought, and many would claim they're far from complete in this area, so raising the cap to 80 might cause more tears from the rogues/pallys.
An increase to 80 also means we get a lot of new abilities to learn, for example at 80:
Druids can learn Nourish - 1.5sec cast "Heals a friendly target for 1883. Heals for an additional 20% if you have a Rejuvenation, Regrowth, or Lifebloom effect active on the target."
Hunters can learn Freezing Arrow - "Fire a freezing arrow that places a Freezing Trap at the target location, freezing the first enemy that approaches, preventing all action for up to 20 sec. Any damage caused will break the ice. Trap will exist for 1 min. Only one trap can be active at a time."
Mages get an interesting one, Mirror Image - Instant cast, 3 min cooldown - "Creates 3 copies of the caster nearby, which cast spells and attack the mage's enemies. Lasts 30 sec." - Looking forward to see how this works in PvP.
Paladins can learn Sacred Shield - Instant Cast "Each time the target takes damage they gain a Sacred Shield, absorbing 500 damage and increasing the paladin's chance to critically hit with Flash of Light by 50% for up to 6 sec. They cannot gain this effect more than once every 6 sec. Lasts 30 sec"
Priests can learn Divine Hymn - 1.5 sec cast "You recite a Holy hymn, causing the closest 10 enemies within 15 yards to become incapacitated for 20 sec., and heals the closest 10 friendly targets within 15 yards for 348 every sec for 6 sec. Incapacitated enemies take 40% less damage while incapacitated and for 3 sec after the incapacitation ends. Damage caused may interrupt the effect on all incapacitated targets." - Maybe one of the best CC spells possible!
Rogues can learn Fan of Knives - 10 sec cooldown "Instantly throw both weapons at all targets within 8 yards, causing 100% weapon damage."
Shamans can learn Hex - 1.5 sec cast time, 45 sec cooldown "Transforms the enemy into a frog. While hexed, the target cannot attack or cast spells. Damage caused may interrupt the effect. Lasts 30 sec. Only one target can be hexed at a time. Only works on Humanoids and Beasts."
Warlocks get a stange one, it's basically two spells:
Demonic Circle (Summon) - 0.5 cast time "You summon a Demonic Circle at your feet, lasting 6 min. You can only have one Demonic Circle active at a time."
Then, Demonic Circle (Teleport) - Instant cast "You teleport to your demonic circle
Finally, Warriors can learn Heroic Throw - Costs 0 rage, 60 sec cooldown "Throws your weapon at the enemy causing damage based on attack power. This ability causes high threat." - This damage is calculated as 12+AP*.50.
Profession level cap increased to 450
This one speaks for itself, higher level cap, means more powerful abilities, pretty much an after effect of the level cap increase. I think this means you can become a "Grand Master" of your selected profession.
New Dungeons and Arthas himself!
The most important aspect (probably), the new dungeons we have are:
* Utgarde Keep
A five man instance, for levels 70-80. Utgarde will be inhabited by the vrykul (led by King Ymiron), a Viking-like race bent on proving their strength to the Lich King, who will raise the most worthy of their warriors to serve him beyond the grave. Therefore, it can be expected that this instance will feature at least some undead.
* Azjol-Nerub
A five man instance, for levels 72-74. Azjol-Nerub, also known as the Spider Kingdom (pronounced "ah-ZHOL nuh-ROOB"), is the vast underground empire of the arachnid Nerubians. This instance will involve Many undead, the Nerubians and Dwarves.
* Ahn'kahet
A five man instance for levels 73-75. One of the sections of Azjol-Nerub, the others being the Inner Kingdom and the Upper Kingdom. Controlled by "neutral" Nerubians and Faceless Ones.
The area known as the Old Kingdom lies deep below the surface of Northrend; and is the original location of Azjol-Nerub. The nerubians preferred to stay well below surface level. This area had not been well maintained because the Scourge never descended this far. By the same token, that meant they hadn't looted as much either. It was easier to avoid the Scourge by staying to these lower levels. Most of the nerubian rebels live down here.
* Ulduar
A 5-25 man instance for levels 77-80. Ulduar is located at The Storm Peaks of Northrend. It is controlled by storm giants, and their minions the crystal golems.
It is expected that Ulduar is where Brann Bronzebeard will unravel the truth about the creation of the dwarven race. Unlike Uldaman, which is an excavated ruin, Ulduar is completely intact - and thus players will be able to venture deep inside and reveal this ancient mystery.
* Naxxramas II
Naxxramas is an entry-level raid instance floating above the Dragonblight, and is available in both 10-man and 25-man versions. It has the shape of a necropolis and has the questionable honor to serve as the seat of one of the Lich King's most powerful officers, the dreaded lich Kel'Thuzad.
* The Nexus
To enter the instance before level 77 players must first do a quest line for a Red Dragon who then flies you to the entrance. There will be two five man instances, The Nexus (Ice Caverns) for level 71-73 players and The Oculus (Magical Rings) which will be for level 80 players. A raid wing called The Eye of Eternity, featuring Malygos as the final boss will also be present.
* Icecrown Citadel
Player limit is 25 for level 80s. The Icecrown Citadel in Northrend sits atop the largest glacier in Azeroth, the Icecrown Glacier. It is here that Ner'zhul was cast into the world of Azeroth. Recently, the Scourge has created this massive fortress, surrounding the Frozen Throne that lies hidden underneath. In a later patch, this will be the pinacle of Wrath of the Lich King raid instances.
* Drak'Tharon Keep
A five man instance for levels 75-77. Drak'Tharon Keep is a strange place filled with dinosaurs and lizards, and teeming with undead. Its final boss fight takes place on raised terraces, where the wizard will bounce players from platform to platform. You're sent in to discover just why the Trolls are leaving their home zone of Zul'Drak
* Chamber of Aspects
The Chamber of Aspects instance will be the location of a single boss raid encounter, with the ability to add more encounters, similar to Onyxia's Lair.
* The Violet Hold
A five man instance for levels 75-77. The Violet Hold is a prison complex located in eastern Dalaran. It is the third instance to be located within the bounds of a capital city (after the Stormwind Stockade and Orgrimmar's Ragefire Chasm).
"for levels" are based upon advised levels only - nearly all this information is taken from official Blizzard posts/WoWwikki as I unfortunately didn't get a beta key.
Siege Weapons and destructible buildings!
A brand new and very interesting new feature of PvP (and in some cases even PvE), siege weapons. These are pilot able vehicles that can be used in certain areas to raze buildings (in PvP) and some weapons that can be used to attack foes (in PvE).
Different races have different siege weapons, and as of yet, siege weapons are going to available for Lake Wintergrasp and the new Northrend battleground, Strand of the Ancients.
We will see catapults, flying machines, several transport vehicles of varying attack and defensive power and even a goblin shredder!
... So, what are you going to do first?

Very interesting, had mine on pre-order for a couple of months. However I will not be going straight to level in Northrend as the areas will be PACKED and laggy as Hell. Myself and McLong have levelled characters recently to be low-mid 60's so we can fly through Outland while everyone else is complaining about the lack of quest mobs in Northrend.
The only thing I will be going to Northrend for straight away is to get my professions above 375.
Am looking forward to the new Holy Pally talent listed though, sounds like the kind of thing Butch could be using.

Indeed, I've personally been trying to get a character to 55 in time to at least see the new DK class in action for myself. I've been very lazy with characters and only got them to around 48 and giving up because I end up hating them.
Started with a pally (blood elf, of course) about 2 weeks ago and he's 41 now, slow mainly because I was helping a friend who was new to the game.

I had WotLK on order for weeks, then quit WoW to try out other games so cancelled altogether. I very nearly resubscribed when they brought in achievements but common sense stopped me, which meant I got to experience Fable II, Dead Space and Fallout 3.
My level 70 druid is on ice, and looking at the next few month's console releases I reckon he won't get defrosted for a good few months.

Heh, I've never really felt the addiction myself, I usually find after a month and a half I'm very bored of the game again and change to find something else.
First time I've tried paladins, and he's really keeping my focus so far. Hopefully be 50 by the end of this week. :)

Pally's are certainly one of the strongest classes... at the moment at least.
My Warlock is level 62 at the moment, and like Butch said, once wrath hits it's going to be so easy getting through Outlands with all the pick up groups available for instances. Although I think so many people will roll Death Knights i'll get a bit sick of seeing them in no time at all.
I've seen on the WoW site that there will be many midnight openings selling the game on wrath launch night. Why bother? We all saw how busy it was on patch day, and that, for me, was only in one major city on alliance. Imagine how it will be when all players from alliance and horde are all crowding round 1 questgiver... you won't get a chance to even start the quest, and that's if the servers don't crash within minutes! It was incredibly bad on patch day, so it's going to be a hell of a lot worse when the actual expansion launches. Looking forward to it anyway.
I tend to get bored of WoW quite frequently. But the developers constantly add quality content, so it's hard to stay out of the game for too long. And announcing recently that they've just hit 11 million subscribers, it seems a few people agree.

Yeah, the only time I've ever died in PvE is when my game lags to beyond 1500ms, it freezes and when I can log back in, I'm dead :)
I really think Holy Light is a bit too powerful a spell for paladins :P
Anyays, I've made it to level 49 now, so I'm on track to reach 55 by the 13th :)
You guys are on the Turalyon realm too, aren't you? Maybe I'll bump into you guys in Outland :D

Yeah we are mainly based on Tura. The trick is to look for people in the guild 'The Bear Punchers', whoever you meet is currently, or has been in the past, employed by Freeola. Myself and McLong probably have the most distinctive names so are fairly obvious when running around!

My copy arrived this morning, pretty much finished the install but I have to leave for work. Will be done by the time I get back from the gf's tonight so I'm tempted to jump straight in to Northrend at 11.01 just for a little gander!

I'm going for a midnight launch myself. Well, I say midnight launch, we have a 24hrs Tesco near the Uni, I might actually just check around the torrent sites and see if I can download it already, then I'll just buy a CD key.
I'm really looking forward to this, have you checked out the world event, Butch? In Orgrimmar and Stormwind there's like 5 dragons with around 300,000 health and several huge spawning undeads. In Org, Thrall fights with you, he one-shots everything :D

I was involved with some fighting in SW harbour yesterday which was fun (if not laggy as Hell). Kept my Hordie away from Org as she is still only 62 and didn't fancy the endless corpse run from getting one shotted by Scourge!

I've ordered my copy from Play.com, which is due in a few days. I'm not in too much of a hurry to play it really which is probably a good thing. I've got a few bits to do, and a few tv shows to catch up on first!
I'll create a DK when I get a chance though, and spend however long it takes getting it to an inn to build some rest up. Then I'll just work on my warlock/warrior as I take them through Northrend.
I'll pop on later, though I'm guessing all the cities are absolutely packed at the moment? All waiting til 11pm when the servers all crash in unison :P
Are you able to create a DK on any realm? Even ones where you don't already have characters? If so, you should create yours on Turalyon...

You're in Colchester right?
If so, you probably mean the Greenstead/Hythe 24 hour Tescos, which is bloody rubbish for computer games!
I lived about a 5min walk from that Tescos for 3 years up until 3 or 4 months ago and tried to buy numerous games on release day (not even at 12:00 am) and they didn't have them, or at least they didn't have them on the shelves.
I imagine they've had stocks of the game for a while, so If you ask a non-gamer looking member of staff, you might even be able to pick it up before 12.

I envy you in a way, I'm just going through season 1-5 of peep show to pass the time at the moment, every moment is still glorious, but you know, I'd rather be watching something new.

A lot of (smart) people are doing that, myself included. I hope DKs are worthwhile in raids though, I'm still a bit sceptical and I bet most people will be terrible with them to begin with.

I'm waiting until 7pm (uni relaxed firewall kicks in) and then I'm joining them :P

You can create one DK on any realm so long as you have a 55+ on any realm. Actually, I seem to remember them saying that this will be implemented and some stage but to start with it's only the realm with your 55+ to stop DK spamming I guess.
Mine shall be Turalyon :P

Well, it's a nightmare trying to get into the game, but so far, it's very good.
Athenelól has already made it to level 80, and Turalyon has seen a few of it's "Realm First!" achievements go as well.

Wow didn't realise somebody was 80 already, 10 levels in 24 hours is sick and a bit sad. I'm happy taking my time through the content, nearly 71 on my main now and 63 on my hordie. Might take my other 70 to Northrend over the weekend.
Not tried a DK yet but I will do at some point, was questing with some last night in Hellfire and they look rather cool.

I had a bit of a whirl last night, of course.
Started a DK to begin with, and the starting area is absolutely awesome. The quests are really cool, and there's a new interface for the bombing quests. Well worth doing. You also get a 100% speed mount pretty easily at about level 56.
I earnt the 50 quest achievement literally as I got through the Dark Portal, so that's how much it takes to get your DK away from the starting area and into pre-wrath content.
Took my 70 to Borean Tundra which looks really cool and has walruses! Only went up about 3 bars or so but that's still over 200,000 xp! Will look forward to spending more time there soon except I hope they increase the spawn rate of mobs, it was getting a bit silly last night.
Apparently the highest char on Turalyon is 75 as of last night, how they even managed that I don't know, let alone lvl 80... I don't see the point in rushing... how's that supposed to be fun?

Well, Athenelól wasn't actually the char that got to 80, but it was him and other members of <Ad Infinitum> boosting another player in the guild. Apparently it was Athene's ideas that made it so quick, they got to 79 in 13 hours, a GM came up and gave them all temporary bans for "exploitation of game mechanics" or something and they've all been reset to 70!
The most annoying part for them? They checked with a different GM before starting to see if they're methods were legal, and he told them 100% chance of not getting banned.

Just started playing around with the Death Knights, oh my why can't the rest of the game be like the starting few quests for them.
It's fantastic beyond all expectations, slaughtering over 100 elites, burning a pillaging towns, creating your own zombie army. This is the stuff they should make more of.

Yeah, you're right, the DK starting zone really is quite good.
The quests are so different from each other, and any other quests in the game really. And the new bombing interfaces are good too.
Plus I really liked the quest when you jump in the mine cart and get dragged along the coast to a ship and get to control the cannons!
I haven't actually touched my DK since getting out of that zone though, I've just dumped him in an inn in Hellfire and have been playing on my main in Northrend since. I'm tempted to delete my DK and make a new one on horde as I haven't got any high level characters there, plus it's an excuse to do the DK starting zone again.

Started my Death Knight yesterday, not really played about with him much yet but it felt weird playing a melee dps (My other characters are Holy Pally, Lock and Hunter) so will take a little getting used to. I don't plan on levelling that fast with him though as I'm bored of Outlands at the moment having just levelled my hunter through there.
Really enjoying the expansion so far, Butch is nearly 74 and is starting to do some serious damage. Once McLong's tank is ready for tackling instances I'll be able to practise my healing!
Not really feeling my lock at the moment, need to though as he is my (and the guilds only) enchanter and tailor.

I've officially given up on my Death Knight.
It's probably just my preferences, but I think they're rubbish. While soloing, they rely on luck a bit too much (in the context of self healing), and I found myself endlessly spamming the two diseases, then heart strike, heart strike, heart strike, reuse diseases etc. in every single situation.
I imagine they're a lot more fun whilst raiding, but I just can't bring myself to level him to 80.
Maybe it was just the sheer awfulness of Hellfire Peninsula that put me in a bad mind set, who knows.
But anyways, I'm back on the good old paladin, and I'm looking forward to some 10 man raids with the guild soon enough.

I've not played mine enough yet to have a real opinion, only taken him through the starting area so he is now sitting in Hellfire getting rest while I level my main characters. He seems ok so far, I just have to get used to the melee dps mechanics.
Butch (my holy pally) is progressing well, hit 77 last night as well as earning 'the Explorer' title thanks to my new cold weather flying. Going to try run a few more instances soon as I have only done Nexus so far and probably need to practice my healing before hitting 80 and heroics. My lock on the other hand really isn't getting a look in and is simply sitting in Tundra de-ing all my unwanted gear...

Finally hit 80 on Thursday with Sholazar, Storm Peaks and Icecrown still to go going to make some serious cash finishing those off (5.5k gold at the moment).My blacksmith is just under the magical 340 mark when I can make some epic pieces for the 3 Freeola staff members who have tanks.
Still not liking my 'lock at the moment, enjoying melee dps far too much which is why I have started to work on my DK's professions in preperation for his levelling through Outland, I'm thinking skinner and herber as I don't have either of them yet plus I can sell the leather on AH and trade the herbs with McLong for some vellum :)
On the other hand, my cow is still sitting in Nagrand at lvl66...

Heh, spare some cash for the needy? I have to get some serious savings going on for the epic flyer, though I've heard Northrend has a lot of good gold going.
I've been really slowed down in my leveling in that I can only level from 1am-6am, if I try to play at any other time, I just get disconnected at every fight :(
Got my Voidaxe last night though, so that's my weapons sorted until 68.
Grats on the 80 though :) well done.

Sorry to necro an old thread but as I know there is a couple of WoW players on the forums thought this may be of interest. As you probably know by now we are getting patch 3.1 tomorrow and with a patch this large we always get a funky new trailer!
Enjoy!

Intruiging, I suppose.
Liking the the new Looking For Group options, and dungeon maps, seems weird that it's taken so long to add these kind of things.
It won't tempt me back to playing again any time soon though I don't think.
